The AfroSports Project

Vision

edit

"To bridge the huge content gap and improve on the systemic bias, in respect of the African continent, by getting real African stories and viewpoints into the mainstream. This will be achieved by making: articles, citations, images, videos, and data, about the historical and contemporary games, sports, and recreational activities, to be readily available and easily accessible, both online and offline, and in different languages."

Overview

edit

Africa has a lot of unknown and unpublicised games, sports and cultural recreational activities, due to the systemic and racial bias, so many professional athletes and sportspersons are underrepresented with low visibility. This projects plans to decolonise the knowledge available on the African Sport scene. The African sport sector is underutilised, huge and rapidly growing, it has not received the coverage it deserves, while some of the available content are not representative of the true state of affairs. AfroSports seeks to drastically reduce the content gap.

Focus will include variety of interests, such as: historical games of cultural significance, Sport festivals, African Sport history articles, biographies of sport personalities (especially women), Sport Institutions, Facilities, Associations, archives of relevant publications about African games/Sports and , images of relevant subjects and personalities, etc. This will be achieved through varying methods, such as GLAMs; editing workshops, writing and upload contests, partnerships with relevant organizations and Government ministries, activating Wikipedians-In-Residence (WIR) in libraries of Sport Institution institutions, and so on, using the help of existing communities/affiliates in Africa and beyond. This project is designed to use Sports to help bridge the content gap on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia and Open projects, as well as to improve on the awareness of these projects and the overall movement in African countries.
