Shelleycaldwell (talk) 15:08, 7 March 2016 (UTC) My article has been accepted as a Start article. Will there be suggestions for improvement? Do I need to make improvements or will others help? When will the article show up on Wikipedia? Thank you for your help.[reply]

Hi Shelleycaldwell, the article "showed up" immediately when it was accepted - however it may take a while for the search index to find it, perhaps a few minutes but at most a few hours. I've begun making a few improvements. One thing you should do is trim the Bibliography down quite drastically. First remove everything that is already used as a reference, then throw out everything that is simply a repetion of another item. For an article of that length one would expect a bibliography to contain only a dozen or so entries, keep only scholarly publications and some that discuss the subject in depth, exhibition catalog leaflets are trivial, take them out.
The article is also a "dead end" as it doesn't contain any links to other articles. Please add wikilinks to other relevant articles such as colleges, major public galleries etc about which we already have articles - I've added a few so that you can see how it's done. I'm trying to create a page for the newly elected mayor of Chapel Hill, NC because when you google "Mayor of Chapel Hill" the immediate result is the previous mayor's Wikipedia page. My article is getting rejected on the basis that it is not a notable enough position. I don't understand this sense the previous mayor has a Wikipedia page. My most recent rejection said I have to find a source from outside of the state. This seems unnecessary because a town mayor would not receive national coverage. Please help me figure out how to complete the page to the required standards. Seimjesse (talk) 19:31, 7 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Seimjesse, The position of Mayor of Chapel Hill, North Carolina is notable and has a Wikipedia article. That does not mean that an occupant of that position is automatically notable. This is often expressed as, "There is no inherent notabiliy".
You argue that Wikipedia has an article about the previous mayor, Mark Kleinschmidt (politician).
  • It could be that Kleinschmidt is not notable and should not have a stand alone article. Wikipedia is forever a work in progress. It contains high quality content and low quality content. Saying that Hemminger should have an article because Kleinschmidt has one is an argument that will cut little ice with experienced editors. It is better to reason from policies and guidelines. The essay Wikipedia:Other stuff exists may help explain why.
  • Another possibility is that Kleinschmidt has received significant press coverage (described in a footnote to WP:POLITICIAN as someone who "has been written about, in depth, independently in multiple news feature articles, by journalists"), but Hemminger has not.
All that being said, I think it's quite possible that Hemminger is notable. Unlike reviewer Robert McClenon, I would not describe your latest changes as minor. The addition of pieces from The News & Observer and WCHL is a big improvement. There is also no requirement that a politician receive coverage from outside their local area or state, although such coverage would certainly be a plus. Nevertheless the reviewer is right that the draft's references (one article about a previous position, one article announcing candidacy, and a pair of articles about a single event - winning the race) are too thin to convincingly demonstrate notability.
I recommend a renewed effort to find reliable in-depth sources. Surely there must be coverage from during the campaign. Work the search links listed after "Find sources:" on the draft. If you know the area, try searching regional media websites directly. Public Broadcasting radio and TV stations often have good political coverage. Try any additional news databases that may be available through libraries you have access to, especially university ones, databases such as ProQuest, Newsbank, Factiva, and LexisNexis. If all else fails, wait a few months so the mayor has a chance to accomplish something in office that will draw the significant independent coverage required for notability. --Worldbruce (talk) 06:12, 8 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
