Wikipedia:WikiProject Athletics/Notability (draft)
This Wikipedia page has been superseded by Wikipedia:Notability (sports)#Athletics/track & field and long-distance running and is retained primarily for historical reference. |
This is an essay on notability. It contains the advice and/or opinions of one or more WikiProjects on how notability may be interpreted within their area of interest. This information is not a formal Wikipedia policy or guideline, as it has not been thoroughly vetted by the community. |
Athletes who compete in the sport of athletics are deemed notable if they meet any of the criteria below:
- Meets WP:GNG or WP:BIO with coverage at the non-local level
- Meets WP:ATH (e.g., has competed at the Olympics or world championships)
- Has finished top 5 in a major international competition (for example an IAAF Golden League meet)
- Has at one time held a world or area record in an event, including age group records. Area record is usually taken to mean a continental record.
- Had a mark that was in the top 50 on the world leading list at the end of any calendar year
- Had a mark that is currently listed on the iaaf all time list
- Has won their respective age group world championship or has been ranked number one in the world at the end of a calendar year within their age group
It is key to note the first condition, while satisfying any of the specific conditions 2–7 guarantees notability, it is not necessary. One may also be deemed notable if they have significant coverage in independent, reliable, and non-local secondary sources.
