Other maps

edit
  • Open Street Map – as open data, this can be used to add maps to articles (Copyright and License, Legal FAQ). Limited amounts of data can be exported as data (.osm file) and converted to other formats. GIS data is also available for download from Open Street Map and third party sites
  • Google Maps – Can be used a reference for route description and lengths. Use the get directions feature from the start of the road to the end of the road, resulting in a line from one end of the road to the other. Add extra points if needed to keep the directions to the road you want. Get the url of the current map view, including search results or directions, by clicking the link icon at the top-right of the search results pane. In the Wikipedia article, use the {{Google maps}} template to properly format the reference (place between <ref> </ref> tags).
  • Bing Maps
  • Street-directory.com.au – Some areas, at certain zoom levels, show pages from commercial street directories including Melway, Sydway, Brisway, and Street Smart

Historical maps

edit
  • MELWAY Edition 1 – 1966 maps of Melbourne, available for free online. There are also additional maps of further out areas of Melbourne from editions 2 to 5.

Roadgeek sites

edit

There are multiple roadgeek sites with loads of useful information on Australian roads. However, these sites can not be reliable sources, as they are self-published, and therefore they should not be used as references for Wikipedia articles. However, once information is found on these sites, it can often be corroborated with a reliable sources, such as official or government published documents. Also note that resources on these sites, such as images, must be released by the copyright holder under an appropriate license before they can be reused here (for more information, see Wikipedia:Image use policy).

If you see these sites used as references, please tag them with {{Self-published source}}. Eventually, or as soon as possible, such references should be replaced with citations to reliable sources.
