Photo challenge
editEvery week the Bristol WikiProject sets a challenge to local photographers in the form of a specific topic that needs illustrating, or a specific shot that Wikipedia requires. There are then four weeks in which to compose your photo(s), and submit up to three shots. Voting then opens for one week, and one (or more, depending on the length of the article) photo is picked to illustrate that page.
There are three principal reasons for running this challenge. Firstly it increases the quality of illustration of Wikipedia, by encouraging the taking of photographs of less popular topics that might be neglected, by picking the best from a selection of images, and by a system of peer review of the photos. Secondly it helps us improve our photography by giving us a specific goal, by seeing other people's approaches to the same shot/topic, and by giving us technical and artistic feedback on our shots. Thirdly it helps build the community.
Here are a few ideas, guidelines and rules:
- The purpose of these photos is an encyclopedia and they must therefore convey information about the topic.
- Photos on Wikipedia must be licensed under the GFDL, cc-by-sa or public domain. You don't have to license it as such to enter the competition, but by entering you agree to license it as such if it wins (and obviously it would be great to use those licenses anyway).
How to enter:
- Through Wikipedia:
- If you are not already a Wikipedian, create an account and log in.
- Upload your photo to WikiMedia commons]
- Add it to the "Entries" section below.
- Through flickr:
- Upload your photo at Flickr.

C3: Temple Church
editThis is the first challenge that really fits my original proposals (i.e. it's not a special event or something that no longer exists. Temple Church, Bristol, a ruined church near Victoria Street.
Deadline for entries is Sunday 03 September. Voting ends Sunday 10 September.
Voting now open on the flickr thread. If you do not have a flickr account you may browse the flickr thread and then vote here.

I took loads more photos today but it's difficult to show the angle of the tower. Should I put one of these on the Temple Church, Bristol until this is judged or someone comes up with something better?
C4: Bishopston
editPerhaps something along Gloucester Road, or something illustrating the monotony of the housing. IIRC from Berkley Road you can see over much of the area.
Deadline for entries is Sunday 10 September. Voting ends Sunday 17 September.
Due to close at the end of October. I've already put a couple of photos there, but they're not great. The railway should be operating a lot over the summer, possibly on sunny weekends but almost certainly on the bank holiday. The article is a reasonable length and has plenty of potential for expansion, so we could get several photos on. I'm thinking exterior, interior and railway. Joe D (t) 18:25, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
Deadline for entries is Sunday 17 September. Voting ends Sunday 24 September.

C6: Council House
editQuite a long article. I'm thinking day and night shots of the whole facade and a closer view of some detail. Maybe an interior if it's possible and there's anything worth seeing inside.
Deadline for entries is Sunday 24 September. Voting ends Sunday 1 October.
