Based on the application to the Wellcome Trust documentation, Wikimedia UK has created a list of objectives for this project. It refers to their strategy structure, which you can see wmuk:Strategic goals.

Headline Objectives as stated on the application form Deliverables as stated on the application form Objective formulated at the start of the project Targets formulated at the start of the project
Content - improvement of cancer pages to support the creation of at least five well-structured, accurate, readable pages about cancer that are candidates for 'Featured Article' status 5 new candidate Featured Articles about cancer In general: "G1.2 The quality of Open Knowledge continues to improve"

(and, less so, the Quantity)

Manage 4 stage process of possible content improvement:

  • Conduct User Research - what do people do with the content on Wikipedia, how do they use it. What do people want -> gather recommendations.
  • Content evaluation - use these findings to help assess what can be improved with specific pages. Involve Patient information team at CRUK to review the relevant articles (Expert review).
  • Support page improvement (could be via talk pages, events)
  • Go back to User Research to compare.
Metrics to monitor
  • Bytes added
  • Quality change of the articles
copyright - Internal change towards openness to migrate CRUK content assets (graphs, images, etc) to a Creative Commons license to facilitate wider use around Wikipedia CRUK's cancer information will be available for use under a Creative Commons license

In general, "G3.3 Legislative and institutional changes favour the release of Open Knowledge"

And less so, "G1.1 The quantity of Open Knowledge continues to increase" - in terms of possible content donations

Possible practical objectives could include:

  • Change the statement on the CRUK website - to include CC statement
  • monitor the number of assets. Probably we are looking at a 3, possibly 4, digit figure in terms of content releases
  • influence the workflow of new images - consider CC licence when commissioning etc
Metrics to monitor
  • Content donated (& usage)
  • Evidence of change towards openness - e.g. meeting minutes, policies
training - raising stakeholders’ awareness to hold seven Wikipedia training sessions at CRUK offices and Institutes around the UK * CRUK staff and researchers will have a greatly raised awareness of how Wikipedia works, and how to edit it, and there will be a significant number of new active users among CRUK staff and scientists
  • We will have produced a publicly available, evidence-based guide to editing cancer-relevant information on Wikipedia (which should have wider relevance to biomedical content in general)
In general, "G2a.3 WMUK volunteers are skilled and capable"

(by volunteers we mean anyone who trains, or is trained at these events)

Otherwise as before. We could clarify that there are several different stakeholder groups relevant:

  • CRUK staff - awareness (and maybe follow up training)
  • Researchers - awareness and providing understanding of how to engage with Wikimedia projects
  • Clinicians - gathering contacts of people who are willing to collaborate with WikiprojectMed in the future

And also:

  • GPs
  • Volunteer Ambassadors
  • MPs (need pinning down if a viable idea)
As before.

Metrics to monitor

  • Contact data for all the participants (sign up sheets)
  • Feedback forms data for all the participants
  • Creation of event pages
Documentation and dissemination to document and share lessons learnt from the project The concept of a Wikipedian in Residence for medical research organisations will have been piloted, and lessons learnt shared with relevant stakeholders Same

In general, "G1.3 We are perceived as the go-to organisation by UK GLAM, educational, and other organisations who need support or advice for the development of open knowledge"

Same as before, with specified:
  • Production of a case study

Metrics

  • Capture names and contact details of the organisations whose interest is raised by the project
  • Monitor media uptake
