JESUS
CHRIST
"In the beginning was the Word" is not only one of the most memorable Bible verse, but is associated with a rich theological legacy. A number of articles in the Christianity project explain these issues.
The article Pre-existence of Christ discusses John 1:1's role in establishing the belief that Jesus Christ existed from eternity with God the Father, and relates it to John 17:5 in which Jesus refers to the glory which he had with the Father "before the world was".
The article Logos (The Word) discusses how John 1:1 has been a key element in establishing the doctrine of the divinity of Christ, and how this theme transposed throughout the Gospel of John.
The article Rhema then discusses how this term is at times called "a word from the Word," referring to the revelation received by the reader of Scripture from the Holy Spirit when The Word (Logos) is read.
From the bookshelf
In this book Simon J. Gathercole presents a new Christological analysis of preexistence, and states that beyond the Gospel of John's direct proclamation, the other three gospels also support Jesus' heavenly identity and preexistence. By relying on the "I have come" statements in the gospels, Gathercole contends that Matthew, Mark, and Luke were also well aware that Jesus preexisted before his earthly ministry.
Did you know...
- ... that the term "Kingdom of Heaven" (Basileia tōn Ouranōn in Greek) is the Gospel of Matthew's form of referring to the Kingdom of God and appears 32 times in Matthew's gospel but nowhere else in the New Testament?
