Description
editThere is currently no coordinated oversight of most of the pages listed below and linked therein Fgnievinski (talk) 17:50, 9 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
List of important pages and categories for this proposed group
- Academia (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)
- Outline of academia (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)
- Category:Academia (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) (number of pages in the category: 180 + 30 subcategories)
- List of WikiProjects currently on the talk pages of those articles
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Academic Journals (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs): "dedicated to improving Wikipedia's coverage of academic journals"
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography/Science and academia (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs): "dedicated to ensuring quality and coverage of biography articles"
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Universities (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs): "aims to improve the coverage of universities and colleges"
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Science (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs): "improve popular science-related articles"
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Education (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs): "to better organize information in articles related to the field of Education"
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Libraries (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs): "Coordinate maintenance of library-related content"
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Open Access (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs): "improving open access-related articles"
- Why do you want to start a new group, instead of joining one of these existing groups?
- Despite related WikiProjects having partial overlap with the present proposal, there is a core set of articles important to WikiProject Academia that is currently "falling through the cracks" among existing WikiProjects (for example, academic culture and positions -- see Outline of academia for details). The scope of WikiProject Academia will be such that articles that are already within the scope of sister WikiProjects and well taken care of will not be disturbed, more specifically:
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Academic Journals (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs): doesn't care about academic publishing other than periodicals
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography/Science and academia (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs): cares only about people
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Universities (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs): cares mostly only about institutions
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Science (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs): doesn't care about non-scientific scholarly/academic knowledge; overlaps in terms of methods
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Education (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs): cares a lot about primary and secondary ed, whereas Academia is focused on tertiary ed
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Libraries (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs): overlaps in terms of academic communication
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Open Access (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs): access to academic publishing (and non-OA related topics)
Support
edit- Support, for the reasons stated above; would join WikiProject Academia. Fgnievinski (talk) 17:50, 9 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
- Support, I would join this project too. − Pintoch (talk) 08:40, 25 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose
edit- Given weak evidence of support so far. We have too many moribund projects & new ones that just tag everything in sight, then die. Wiki CRUK John (talk) 11:58, 26 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Discussion
edit- Would it be more appropriate to start a WP:Task Force in one of the existing WikiProjects? Any host suggestions? Thanks. Fgnievinski (talk) 17:48, 15 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
- Looks like the proposal failed. It seems that Category:Academia would be a good place to focus for the moment. Fgnievinski (talk) 16:32, 9 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
- Wouldn't this be already handled under WP:EDUCATION and WP:SCIENCE ? -- 67.70.35.44 (talk) 06:58, 24 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
- WP:SCIENCE doesn't care about the humanities (only about the hard sciences); WP:EDUCATION doesn't care about (non-educational) research. Fgnievinski (talk) 14:12, 24 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
- WPSCIENCE does do research, and what do you mean by only hard sciences? The project description from its project page, and the link to its subprojects does not indicate any such restriction. It includes Category:Scientific disciplines as in scope, which has Category:Social sciences contained within it ; perhaps what you're looking for is a subproject underneath WP:SCIENCE, such as WP:WikiProject Social sciences or WP:WikiProject Humanities ? -- 67.70.35.44 (talk) 00:33, 25 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
