Description
editAs we know, Wikimedia Commons only allows free images. The English Wikipedia allows some copyrighted images, but there are many restrictions on them. Although there is a process for requesting content owners to release their work under a free license, it seems, at least to me, that very few editors use this process. I think this is because either 1) some editors don't bother requesting permission because the process of e-mailing the copyright holder, waiting for the reply and forwarding the response to the OTRS team is too time-consuming, or 2) that this has a low success rate. (True, it is unlikely that Apple will release its logo under a free license, but that doesn't mean it's not worth a try.) Therefore, the purpose of this WikiProject is to allow users to request copyright permission in a more organized and efficient manner. Users would then go through the non-free media on Wikipedia and contact the copyright holders to request permission. If permission is granted, the media would be uploaded to Commons. Will this be a good WikiProject, or would it be better as an extension of WikiProject Copyright Cleanup? Ixfd64 (talk) 01:47, 27 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
