Description
editThis is a proposal to form a WikiProject to cover the lists of fictional things in wikipedia, This project will cover over 728 categorized articles in more than 41 categories. I want to form an organized effort to improve the quality of fictional lists and lists of fictional things by removing cruft, vandalism and indiscriminate collections of information, standardizing section order, naming conventions, use of wikitables, ensuring wikipolicies are followed and moving away from an itemized list format and introducing prose and images to increase the usefulness and aesthetics of these types of articles.
Typically, an article of this scope will be created with good intentions, but often goes neglected, please see: fictional cats as a prime example. It's long, disorganized and filled with minor references and trivia, for example: The multiple unnamed cats in the anime "Black Cat." is listed verbatim as an entry in this article. Part of the goal of this wikiproject would be to identify and tag articles like these and to clean them up. An example of what my ultimate goal would be more like List of fictional towns and villages. An itemized list may as well be replaced by a category, but a list can have prose, it can be clean, concise, descriptive, have notes and pictures and I believe this is how these lists should be portrayed.
A short list of some of the larger articles in this scope:
- List of fictional medicines and drugs (141,000 kb)
- List of fictional countries (128,000kb)
- List of fictional robots and androids (82,000 kb)
- List of fictional cats (79,000kb)
- List of fictional dogs (60,000kb) -> was at (80,000 kb)
- List of fictional extraterrestrials (60,000 kb)
Here are some of the most important categories to this project:
- Category:Lists of minor fictional characters (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) (2 C, 114 P)
- Category:Lists of fictional animals (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) (1 C, 84 P)
- Category:Lists of fictional characters (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) (13 C, 42 P)
- Category:Lists of fictional things (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) (8 C, 43 P)

- Why do you want to start a new group, instead of joining one of these existing groups?
Because of the very nature of the articles within this scope, these lists are generally created and left, slowly populated with trivial nonsense, and eventually nominated and often deleted. These articles could be a useful, interesting selection on wikipedia but we need to organize our efforts, centralize our intentions and work together to maintain the integrity of the articles.
It is also worth noting that the scope covers a wide variety of topics including film, literature, television, comics, mythology, anime and manga, and characters so a taskforce would not fit neatly in any of the accompanying WikiProjects, not even WikiProject lists (For example: Dragons in Greek mythology falls in this scope, but is not a part of WikiProject Lists.

Discussion
edit- Comment My recommendation would be a taskforce operating under WP:WPLISTS & WP:FCHAR rather than a new WikiProject entirely. I believe even with the explanation presented above, that would be the best-case scenario.
As for Dragons in Greek mythology, it either is a list and falls under WP:WPLISTS, or isn't and would not be within the scope of your proposed WikiProject either.Salvidrim! 18:43, 23 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]- Point taken, I suppose I'll just formally remove the whole thing, huh? =] Thanks though! - In any case, while I would not formally be an active of the taskforce, the topic intersects with my own area of editing (video games) often, thus I would certainly support the creation of a Taskforce (as outlined above). WP:FICTLISTS? Salvidrim! 19:17, 23 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- WP:FICTLISTS sounds great, but I'm still trying to figure how to best go about setting up the task-force.. Ncboy2010 (talk) 20:27, 23 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
