Wikipedia:WikiProject Referees
Description
editA project to cover referees, umpires, assistants and other match officials biographies for any sport AIRcorn (talk) 07:22, 17 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
List of important pages and categories for this proposed group
- Referee (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) Was more wanting to focus on referee biographies, but this is the obvious parent
- Any and every referees biography.
- Category:Sports officials (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) (number of pages in the category: no idea, maybe a thousands judging from the 178 just at English football referees)
- List of WikiProjects currently on the talk pages of those articles
- Please invite these and any other similar groups to join the discussion about this proposal. See Wikipedia:WikiProject_Council/Directory to find similar WikiProjects.
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
- The Wikiproject of whatever sport the referee controls (e.g cricket basketball American football)
- Why do you want to start a new group, instead of joining one of these existing groups?
- Editing, fixing and maintaining referee biographies is one of my main focuses here now. They are common targets of vandalism and other problematic editing. They also lack notability, style and other guidelines many other biographical topics have. Having a centralised place where notifications, discussions and attempts at collaboration could take place would be useful. I also admit it would be nice to attract more eyes to this area, even if they only focus on their sport of interest.
- None of the existing groups are really suitable. WikiProject Biography covers too many other articles. My original plan was to make it a task-task force of Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography/Sports and games,[1] but I did't think it is worth altering Template:WikiProject Biography to add another task force as it is transcluded on so many pages. If that is a better option than starting a project from scratch then I am happy to do so. I am looking to cover all referees, so the individual sports projects don't really meet my need. There are a few that have referee task forces[2][3] but they appear inactive and again have a narrower focus than I was intending. WP:WikiProject Sports would have been the best option for a taskforce apart from the fact it says individual athletes are out of scope.
Support
editAlso, specify whether or not you would join the project.
- AIRcorn (talk) 07:22, 17 November 2016 (UTC) Would join and be active in maintaining. For example see User:Aircorn/Sandbox/Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography/Sports and games/Referees, User:Aircorn/Sandbox/REF and my contribs.[reply]
Discussion
edit- Oppose as redundant and impractical. No one is interested in referees as category unto themselves. Rather, snooker-focused editors write about snooker refs, football-focused editors write about football refs, etc. Refs are already fully covered by the sports wikiprojects. — SMcCandlish ☏ ¢ >ʌⱷ҅ᴥⱷʌ< 22:37, 13 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
