Description
editI have thought about this for a while now, and I think we should honestly discuss returning WikiProject Comics/Webcomics work group to WikiProject status. This was done in 2007 (discussion – notice) due to a dip in WikiProject Webcomic's activity levels. However, in my experience, the work group has had stable levels of activity consistent with a small WikiProject rather than a work group.
The benefit of styling it as a WikiProject rather than a work group is the ability to have an independent WikiProject banner for talk pages. Right now, {{WikiProject Comics}} is set to collapse work groups by default if more than one exist in a given topic area. That is rather unfortunate and destroys the Webcomics work group's ability to grow and expand. Mind you, I don't think a potential WikiProject Webcomics should separate itself completely from WikiProject Comics. I'm looking to give it WikiProject Libertarianism/WikiProject Computer Security treatment here. –MJL ‐Talk‐☖ 17:14, 22 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Seems like a very valid split to me. They're as different as Film and Television. Argento Surfer (talk) 18:18, 22 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
- I agree with Argento Surfer on this, completely. I'd definitely join this workgroup, which I wasn't aware of, as I've created a couple of pages for webcomics myself (Mage & Demon Queen and Dumbing of Age) and have a whole bunch of others I had thought of creating, but haven't got them yet. --Historyday01 (talk) 18:20, 22 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
- Yeah sure. I don't really get the WikiProject/work group distinction too well, but looking over some other WikiProjects, it seems like it would be consistent with how other WikiProjects are handling it. I'd join. Oornery (talk) 00:19, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
- I would join. I think this makes sense, though there may be times when queries need to be cross-posted to Project Comics. HenryCrun15 (talk) 03:06, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
- I have and had a few concerns. My first was that we're not particularly active, though I now do think that we would be a relatively active WikiProject compared to some others. Right now, my main concern is that a lot of back-end pages may need to be moved and fixed. For example, this page would be affected: Wikipedia:WikiProject Comics/Webcomics work group/Hot articles. Of course these sorts of issues aren't a reason not to move our project into a proper WikiProject, but it's just something to keep in mind during this process. ~Maplestrip/Mable (chat) 14:18, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
- Work groups aren't as visible as projects, and the hope is that splitting this would attract more activity. I don't know how realistic that is, but I'm very interested to see how it plays. Argento Surfer (talk) 14:23, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
- The Project guidance page suggests that a project could go ahead if 6–12 people express interest in joining, and we have 7. Is this enough to go ahead with the proposal? HenryCrun15 (talk) 20:23, 9 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
- Actually, I've decided to be bold and draft up some WikiProject Webcomics pages. You can find my draft of the main page at Wikipedia:WikiProject Webcomics. If we don't end up moving the work group to a project, that's ok, but it gives an idea of what it would look like. HenryCrun15 (talk) 00:45, 10 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
So it's been a month of trialling Webcomics as a separate project and it seems to be going well (or at least not causing any problems). I think we can declare this a successful transition and close this proposal. HenryCrun15 (talk) 04:43, 11 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
