Wikipedia:WikiProject Indonesia/Peer review/Australia–Indonesia relations
I've made some pretty big changes to the structure of the article, and expanded on much of its content. Would be really keen to get some more feedback about the general direction it's heading in order to keep building on it. What topics haven't been adequately discussed? Is there anything in terms of formatting or writing style that could be improved? I have found it hard to track down ideal models for bilateral country articles. tim (talk) 23:42, 22 May 2013 (UTC)
- The sentence in the lead: "In recent years, the relationship has been characterised by growing two-way trade of $14.9 billion in 2011-12, an increase of 8.3% on the previous year" seems too specific, because it will get dated very quickly, and maybe already is. --99of9 (talk) 08:27, 27 May 2013 (UTC)
- I think some discussion of migration is missing. In particular, this article should probably be smoothly linked somewhere: Indonesian_Australian. --99of9 (talk) 08:40, 27 May 2013 (UTC)
- I have added added in a new section discussed migration, which includes census data on Indonesians in Australia, and some limited information on Australians in Indonesia. It seems that BPS doesn't really keep much information on foreigners in Indonesia, but I did track down a BI report with some information on expats. I'd like to include a bit more detail on Australians living in Bali, but there isn't very much hard data there either. The Australian had an interesting article on the topic, though: [1] tim (talk) 00:43, 30 May 2013 (UTC)
- In terms of precedents, there are no Featured Articles on bilateral relations, and only one Good Article: Germany–Japan relations. So maybe you will have to take the lead here - this is already at least B-class - I've rerated to reflect this. --99of9 (talk) 08:48, 27 May 2013 (UTC)
- The general direction is excellent, however it feels like it focuses on the controversies (and yet it almost skips over the David Jenkins article about Suharto entirely), and is focused slightly too much on the Australian perspective of those events. I'd like to see more about the border dispute, and how Indonesia felt ripped off by where the border was placed in light of Indonesians having fished in what are now Australian waters, and I suspect there is quite a bit more about fishing vessels to be added (e.g. diplomatic problems caused by vessels being burnt and captains facing Australian courts).
- Also I think it is necessary to expand greatly on how Australian aid is used, especially within the AusAID programs. There have been two comprehensive external reviews of AusAID in Indonesia that I am aware of, and have read, so there should be some independent sources about it. Also the amount of Australian aid needs to be put into context of the amount of aid that Indonesia receives from the world - I recall it being a fairly low percentage.
- I am a bit concerned about the use of the Lowy Institute stats in section "Public opinion", but I havent dug into them yet so I can only hand wave at present. I am doubly concerned about the "Security" section, especially that is is within a section called "Current issues". IMO it is a dead issue. There has been concern in Australia about invasion from the North (I last saw its ugly head when the crazies were looking for excuses to campaign against the gun buyback in Queensland), but concern about Indonesia has largely faded, and continues to fade.
- It would be good to see stats on number of Indonesians on the Australian census over time, and vice versa - the ABS stats from user:99of9 should contain this data.
- The Diplomacy section can grow quite a bit, detailing the size and activities of the consular missions, and the names of all the important consular staff.
- One notable omission is the sister-cities and especially the sister-schools programs.
- p.s. 'Lombok Agreement' is used in some places; 'Lombok Treaty' is used in others. Also 'Lombok Agreement' appears to also be the name given to a Malaysia-Indonesian agreement. I think a stub should be created to lock this down, and move some of the details there. Gotta run to go out for dinner. This morning I pinged User_talk:Russavia#Australia-Indonesia_relations, who does a lot of foreign relation articles. Hopefully he'll provide a review too. - I don't have bulk census time-series' yet, because they change format every 5 years :-(. It probably wouldn't be too much work to get this particular stat though. --99of9 (talk) 12:26, 27 May 2013 (UTC)
- The ABC videos User:Wittylama uploaded suit this article really well. I've done a license and attribution review on Commons for all the ones used here, so they're all compliant. --99of9 (talk) 12:26, 27 May 2013 (UTC)
- For any wikignomes out there, there's a bit of work to do to make the citation style consistent. --99of9 (talk) 12:26, 27 May 2013 (UTC)
- Phew! Thanks guys. Definitely some food for thought here - thanks for the link through to the Germany–Japan relations article, too. When I get some time, I'll see what Indonesian-based sourches (CSIS, English language newspapers) have been focussing on with respect to Australia to give a better representation of that side of things. tim (talk) 11:16, 28 May 2013 (UTC)
