Wikipedia:WikiProject Lepidoptera/Article Classification
- This was shamelessly copied from elsewhere, and is currently being changed to suit the purpose of WikiProject Lepidoptera.
WikiProject Lepidoptera manages lots of articles related to butterflies and moths. This section is an attempt to categorise some of the main ones as to quality level and address which ones need work the most.

This is an ongoing task and your help would be appreciated. Have a read of some of the existing classifications so you know what this is about, and please do read the instructions before starting, as there are a few tweaks and other jobs we can do at the same time as classifying with minimal extra effort and good returns!
Article Assessment Department
editWelcome to WikiProject Lepidoptera Article Assessment Department. The bot providing the classification information runs once a day at about 6:00 UTC, so most of the time the data presented here has a lag of one day.
How to grade
edit- Locate ungraded Lepidoptera related articles which are within the scope of the project. Those we know about reside in Category:Unassessed Lepidoptera articles and Category:Unknown-importance Lepidoptera articles
- Grade the article using the grading and importance scheme below.
- Once graded, the {{LepidopteraTalk}} template needs to be included (not subst'd) on the Talk page with the correct parameters. (most articles will have it already, but with no parameters).
- Edit the /comments subpage to add comments about why you rated the article the way you did. Please sign and date your comment with ~~~~ as usual.
- Apply small fixes on the spot (or big fixes if you have the time and inclination).
- While you are there, check that the article is in at least one (and usually only one) Lepidoptera category.
- If the article is graded better than a stub but it has a stub template, remove the stub template(s) from the article.
- * If the article in serious need of some 'tender loving care', add it to Wikipedia:WikiProject_Lepidoptera#Adopt_an_article
- Add stubs to the "articles to expand" section of the To Do list, add cleanup candidates to that list too.
- If the article needs a photo, put a {{Reqphoto}} template onto the article's talk page and add it to the "photos needed" list on the To do page
- If an article might be in need of either merging or splitting, please note the article first and, for merge proposals, any articles you would suggest merging the article into. update this
Examples
editPlace some examples of the template usage/grading procedure here.
- For example, change {{LepidopteraTalk}} to {{LepidopteraTalk|B|Low}} if you think it's a low importance B class article... then explain why on the comments subpage which you can get to by clicking on the edit link in the Lepidoptera box.
Grading scheme
editCodes and meanings
editArticle progress grading scheme
editStatus | Template | Meaning of Status |
---|---|---|
Needed-Class | {{Needed-Class}} | The article hasn't been started yet. You can help by creating it. |
Merge-Class | {{Merge-Class}} | The article is a merge candidate, as it probably should not stand on its own. Remarks should clarify suggested merge target. If multiple articles are to be merged into one, or if the issue is complicated, it is advised to list it at the end of this article. |
Stub-Class | {{Stub-Class}} | The article is either a very short article or a stub that will need a lot of work to bring it to A-Class level. |
Start-Class | {{Start-Class}} | The article has a more content than a stub, but is inadequate in content. |
C-Class | {{C-Class}} | The article has a decent amount of content, but it is still very weak in certain areas (remarks should clarify where). |
B-Class | {{B-Class}} | The article is "almost there" but it may be missing one of the following: references, balance of content, NPOV or an important section. Alternatively, the English may need a comprehensive rewrite to make it flow. |
A-Class | {{A-Class}} | The article provides a well-written and complete description of the topic, as described in How to write a Great Article. It includes a well-written introduction to the topic, and an appropriate series of headings to break up the article. It should have sufficient external literature references, preferably from the "hard" literature rather than websites. It should be well illustrated, with no copyright problems. |
GA-Class | {{GA-Class}} | Reserved exclusively for articles that have received "Good Article" status, and meet the current criteria for Good Articles. Article should be at or around A-class to receive this tag. |
FA-Class | {{FA-Class}} | Reserved exclusively for articles that have received "Featured article" status, and meet the current criteria for featured articles. |
Article importance grading scheme
editStatus | Template | Meaning of Status |
---|---|---|
Top-Class | {{Top-Class}} | This article is of the utmost importance to this project, as it forms the basis of all information. For example, articles Lepidoptera, Butterfly and Moth. |
High-Class | {{High-Class}} | This article is fairly important to this project, as it covers a general area of knowledge. For example, national or area lists of lepidoptera; pages on butterfly biology; lepidoptera species of high scientific, economic or cultural importance; threatened or endangered species or those having high public recognition for any reason, such as Monarch butterfly, Gypsy moth, Silkworm, Palos Verdes Blue or Maguey worm. |
Mid-Class | {{Mid-Class}} | This article is relatively important to this project, as it fills in some more specific knowledge of certain areas. For example, articles on higher taxa such as superfamilies and families, and, lists which are subsets of national lists and do not create new links. |
Low-Class | {{Low-Class}} | This article is of lesser importance to this project, but it covers a highly specific area of knowledge or an obscure piece of trivia. E.g. all butterfly/moth species (less those having higher importance), genera, tribes, subfamilies, as well as, wikis on trivial subjects such as fictional lepidoptera. |
None | None | This article is of unknown importance to this project. It remains to be analyzed. |
Important: Please note that species may only be graded as either 'high' or 'low'. If a species is graded 'high' please ensure that it is notable or important as per the directions given in the scheme above.
Articles covered by the project
editThe covered articles are sorted in two ways: first, by quality (A, GA, B, Start, Stub), then, inside these categories, by importance (Top, High, Mid, Low).
Table of Lepidoptera articles by quality and importance
editDefunct facility
editThe page {{Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Lepidoptera articles by quality}} was earlier used to track the WikiProject Lepidoptera pages, arranged as per importance and progress, but has been depreciated.
Present facility
editThe table of Lepidoptera articles by quality and importance is now available vide {{User:WP_1.0_bot/Tables/Project/Lepidoptera}}, which is updated daily, and which transcludes as given above, at the top right of the page.
