The WikiProject on New Zealand heritage is a project to better organise information in articles related to the country's heritage. The project is a sub-project to WikiProject New Zealand.

Scope

At a national level, Heritage New Zealand maintains a list of registered items. In addition, each city or district council maintains a list of heritage items as defined in their respective district plan. The scope of this project is both national and local level, with more focus at the national level.

Note that Heritage New Zealand's list is divided into five main areas:

  • Historic places (which is further split into categories I and II)
  • Historic areas
  • Wahi tapu
  • Wahi tapu areas
  • Wāhi tūpuna

At the Aotearoa New Zealand Online meeting on 8 November 2020, it was noted that the German Wikipedia provides a complete set of list articles that capture all items listed by Heritage New Zealand. There are 174 German list pages. The equivalent work on the English Wikipedia has a mere three lists. It was further noted that the set of Wikidata items is complete and in reasonable shape. Furthermore, many images on Wikimedia Commons are captured in categories and linked to Wikidata. Out of this situation came the idea that maybe, we should auto-generate the lists directly from Wikidata using Listeria.

The task at hand is to use Listeria to create lists. First of all, what geographic scope should be covered by each list? The suggestion is that an item may appear in more than one list (e.g. Wharetiki House may appear in a list in articles covering Colombo Street, Christchurch Central City, List of historic places in Christchurch, and List of historic places demolished after the Christchurch earthquakes). How do we define membership with various articles in Wikidata?

The way the German articles are organised are as follows:

  • one list article per region (as the New Zealand Historic Places Trust used to organise itself according to the 16 New Zealand regions), but not including the sub-list content
  • sub-lists for each town or city with at least five listings.

The way the English articles may be organised are as follows:

  • one list per territorial local authority area (city or district; that's how they are organised by Heritage New Zealand)
  • exclusive sub-lists if the above approach produces lists that are too long (which will be the case for Auckland)
  • additional sub-lists as desired (e.g. by town, suburb, street, topic area, or geographic entity)

There are a number of issues to be agreed on. The details for these will be discussed on the talk page. Issues include:

  • Which topics should be covered in the columns?
  • Which headings should be displayed?
  • Should some of the columns be optional?
  • Should the list always show the first image listed in Wikidata?
  • Some items have articles. Other items are notable but don't have articles. Many listings won't be notable. How do we decide whether to include a redlink for a notable but missing article?
  • Is the English label always suitable as the item's description?
  • Do we show street address?
  • Do we provide a link for coordinates?
  • Do we provide start and end dates for the item?
  • How do we deal with items that no longer exist?
  • Should we use a date format that is easy to read, e.g. DD MMM YYYY?
  • Do we link through to the Commons category (if there is one)?
  • How do we display the listing type?
