The Northern Irish articles wikiproject manages several hundred articles related to Northern Ireland, with a broad and nested hierarchy of categories covering them. This section is an attempt to categorise some of the main ones as to quality level and address which ones need work the most.

This is an ongoing task and your help would be appreciated. Have a read of some of the existing classifications so you know what this about, and please do read the instructions before starting, as there are a few tweaks and other jobs we can do at the same time as classifying with minimal extra effort and good returns!

How to grade

edit
  • Locate ungraded Northern Ireland related articles which are within the scope of the project. Those we know about are (will be) in the lists below
  • Grade the article using the grading scheme
  • Apply small fixes on the spot (or big fixes if you have the time and inclination)
  • While you are there, check that the article is in at least one (and usually only one) Northern Ireland category.
  • If the article in serious need of some 'tender loving care', add it to Wikipedia:WikiProject Northern Irish articles#Adopt an article
  • Add stubs to the "articles to expand" section of the To Do list, add cleanup candidates to that list too
  • If the article needs a photo, put a {{Reqphoto}} template onto the article's talk page and add it to the "photos needed" list on the To do page
  • If an article might be in need of either merging or splitting, please note the article first and, for merge proposals, any articles you would suggest merging the article into.

Grading scheme

edit

The following grading scheme and classification system was copied from The Beatles Project which, in turn, follows the criteria established by both WikiProject Ethnic groups and Version 1.0 Editorial Team and was lifted from Wikipedia:WikiProject Indigenous peoples of North America.

Sample Table

edit

This table can be copied as is and used as a basis for an entire new type, but for most cases, just copy a row in a table already there to add your new article assessment, and refer to this table to understand the meaning of the columns.

Status Template Meaning of Status
Needs Opinion {{/Unknown}} This article has not yet been classified into the categories below. Please help by classifying this article.
Not Started {{/Needed}} The article hasn't been started yet. You can help by creating it.
Merge {{/Merge}} The article is a merge candidate, as it probably should not stand on its own. Remarks should clarify suggested merge target. If multiple articles are to be merged into one, or if the issue is complicated, it is advised to list it at the end of this article.
Merge or Delete {{/MergeDel}} This WikiProject acknowledges that not everything which can be said about Northern Irish-related subjects belong in a general enyclopedia. This article is a candidate for a deletion nomination or at best a merge of whatever useful info is in it, to some other article. Suggest the other article if you can. A redirect should be left behind whether info is merged or tossed.
Merge {{/Merged}} Article has been merged and is now a redirect.
AfD {{/AfD}} This WikiProject acknowledges that not everything which can be said about the Beatles belongs in a general enyclopedia. This article is a candidate for AfD and it is so off, that it is recommended that no redirect should be left behind.
Stub {{/Stub}} The article is either a very short article or a stub that will need a lot of work to bring it to A-Class level.
Start Class {{/Start}} The article has a decent amount of content, but it is still very weak in certain areas (remarks should clarify where), and may lack a table.
B-Class {{/B-Class}} The article is "almost there" but it may be missing one of the following: references, balance of content, NPOV or an important section. Alternatively, the English may need a comprehensive rewrite to make it flow.
A-Class {{/A-Class}} The article provides a well-written and complete description of the topic, as described in How to write a Great Article. It includes a well-written introduction to the topic, and an appropriate series of headings to break up the article. It should have sufficient external literature references, preferably from the "hard" literature rather than websites. It should be well illustrated, with no copyright problems.
FA {{/FA}} Reserved exclusively for articles that have received "Featured article" status, and meet the current criteria for featured articles.

Note: the idea for the "templates" to simplify the tagging cells came from Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Worklist... thanks to the hard working users there for lots of great ideas about how to do classification!

Partial list of pages covered by the project

edit

(Broken into sections for easy editing. The sections are based on (but not completely congruent to) the major or most important categories that the articles are.)

Some usage notes:

Where the tables have letter headings you can edit just one letter's worth of articles. This reduces edit conflicts but can be more confusing to look at because you are editing the middle of table markup, and the preview will look like jumbled text. If you are not as comfortable, slap an INUSE tag (there's one at the top already, normally commented out, just move the comment arrow to the right of it, and save...) on this whole page and edit the whole table at once... when done, move the comment arrow back to the left of the INUSE tag and Bob's your uncle.

Note also that on the class "templates" ... CASE MATTERS. /A-class is not the same as /A-Class

These are some of the primary articles of the project.
