1951 - Lefty Frizzell joined the Grand Ole Opry. 1956 - Billboard calls Elvis Presley "the most controversial entertainer since Liberace." 1973 - It's Mary Wilson and The Supremes Day in Detroit, MI. 1977 - The Sex Pistols made their first appearance on Britain's Top of the Pops, despite many protests. 1978 - The movie Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band opens. 1980 - Keith Godchaux, formerly of the Grateful Dead, was critically injured when his car hits a flatbed truck. 1982 - Queen opened the North American leg of their Hot Space tour. 1989 - Weird Al Yankovic's UHF opened. 1990 - 350,000 people attended Roger Waters' performance of The Wall at the Berlin Wall. The show included appearances by Van Morrison, Bryan Adams, the Scorpions, Joni Mitchell, Cyndi Lauper and Sinead O'Connor. 1994 - Oasis played their first show in the U.S. in New York. 1995 - A lawsuit brought against Michael Jackson by five security guards he had fired was thrown out of court. The guards said they were fired because they knew too much about Jackson's involvement with young boys. 1996 - Kim Thayil of Soundgarden is arrested for hitting a person trying to take his picture. 1998 - The Beastie Boys hit the road in support of Hello Nasty in Seattle. 1998 - Scott Weiland is arrested on a felony warrant over a 1997 arrest for possession of heroin and drug paraphernalia. 1999 - Charley Pride received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. 2001 - Madonna kicked off the North American portion of her Drowned World tour in Philadelphia. 2003 - Chris Martin of Coldplay was charged with malicious damage to a photographer's car in Australia. Martin claimed the journalist had been harassing him and he lost his temper. 2003 - Brandon Cruz left the Dead Kennedys to spend more time with his family. He was originally a child actor on the program The Courtship of Eddie's Father. 2003 - Iron Maiden opened their Give Me 'Ed...'Til I'm Dead tour in Worcester, MA with Motorhead and Dio. 2005 - Ashanti was found guilty of breaching her contract with a producer and was ordered to pay $630,000. |
