The taxobox can be either a manual taxobox or an automated taxobox (in this case {{Automatic taxobox}}); the latter is currently used in many spider articles and has the advantages of ensuring consistency and making updates easier.
Sample code for an automatic taxobox
editAll the text enclosed in «..» is replaced by actual values. The value for |authority=
may require parentheses.
<!--{{Italic title}} not usually needed-->
{{Automatic taxobox
| name = «English name» <!--omit if no English name and the taxobox title should be the same as the genus name-->
| image =
| image_caption =
| taxon = «genus name»
| authority = [[«full name»|«short name»]], «year»<ref name=WSC_g«id»/>
| type_species =
| type_species_authority =
| diversity_link = List of «family» species#«genus»
| diversity_ref = <ref name=WSC_g«id»/>
| diversity = «number» species
| subdivision_ranks = Species<ref name=WSC_g«id»/>
| subdivision = [[#Species|See text]].
| range_map =
}}

Using an automatic taxobox assumes that a template "Template:Taxonomy/«genus»" exists or is created. See Introduction to the automated taxobox system for more information.

Notes
editOptional and mandatory fields
editYou can leave certain fields blank (e.g. image, image_caption, range_map). They will then just be invisible until someone fills them in. If name is not filled in, the page title will be used.
Diversity
editHere's how the diversity thing goes: there are lists of species or redirects to them for every one of the spider families, and they're named List of <family> species, e.g. List of Atypidae species. So you enter this, and attach an anchor (#) with the genus name to it, eg. List of Atypidae species#Calommata. This way, users can click on Diversity and see for themselves which species are currently in the respective genus. The lists of species by family tend to be more regularly updated than genus pages.
Range map
editIf you do create a range map (see example1, example2), please upload it to wikimedia commons, and categorize it as "commons:Category:Spider habitat maps".
Authority
editIt's nice to link to an author, even if there is no article for them (this way all species described by one person can easily be found). Here are several lists with the full names:
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Spiders/List of Arachnologists
- List of zoologists by author abbreviation
- German list of zoologists
Type species
editIf you provide a Wikipedia:WikiProject_Tree_of_Life/taxobox_usage#Type_Species type species, please use the name of the original description (=first synonym in the World Spider Catalog), but link it to the recent name. The describer in this case should never be in parentheses.
References
editAll information in taxoboxes needs to be referenced, either in the taxobox itself or in the article. Secondary sources should be used for authorities: Smith may have described a species in 1856, but it could have been a superfluous or duplicated name, so referencing to the original publication is not evidence of the currently accepted authority. The ideal source for taxobox fields is usually the World Spider Catalog.
