Central of South Carolina

Introductory

The Central of South Carolina is a corporation of the State of South Carolina, having its principal office at Charleston, S. C. The records examined do not indicate that the Central of South Carolina was controlled by any individual or corporation, nor, on the other hand, that it controls any common-carrier corporation. The property of the Central of South Carolina has been operated since the construction thereof by the Coast Line or by predecessors of that company.

Corporate History

The Central of South Carolina was incorporated February 9, 1876, by special act of the Legislature of South Carolina as the Williamsburg Railroad Company, the name of which was changed. The purpose for which the company was incorporated was not indicated by the records reviewed. The date of its organization was December 23, 1878.

Development of Fixed Physical Property

The owned mileage of the Central of South Carolina, 40.202 miles, extending from Lanes to Sumter, S. C., was acquired partly by purchase and partly by construction. Between 1879 and April 1, 1882, it constructed its road and recon- constructed[sic] property described as Pritchett's tram road, which had been acquired in 1881.

Leased Railway Property

The entire property of the Central of South Carolina is leased to the Coast Line for a term of 99 years from December 1, 1881. The terms of the lease and the rental accruing for the year ending on date of valuation are given in the chapter on leased railway property of the report on the Coast Line.
