Predecessor Companies
PITTSFORD AND RUTLAND RAILROAD COMPANY

The only obtainable records of the Pittsford and Rutland Railroad Company are a minute book and articles of association filed with the State of Vermont. These records state that the company was incorporated under the general laws of that State on May 26, 1890, and was organized on June 27 of the same year. The records of the carrier state that it leased and operated the property of the Pittsford and Rutland Railroad Company without rental from the date of completion in 1890 to November 13, 1911, and that on the latter date it succeeded to the franchises, rights, and property of the company.

BRANDON AND WEST RUTLAND RAILROAD COMPANY

The Brandon and West Rutland Railroad Company was incorporated on May 27, 1901, under the general laws of Vermont, and organized on the same date. Upon the date of its incorporation the company acquired by purchase from the Rutland–Florence Marble Company about 2.712 miles of single-track standard-gauge railroad, extending from a connection with the Rutland Railroad at Florence to Florentine Quarry, Vt. No records are available showing under what conditions the property was purchased nor the nature of the considerations given therefor.

The property acquired by the company was originally built in two sections; the original road, between Florence and the Pittsford Italian Quarry, about 1.17 miles, was constructed during the years 1874 and 1875 by individuals, and the extension to Florentine Quarry, about 1.542 miles, was constructed in 1893 by the Smith Brainard Marble Company. Until acquired by the company the property was used as industrial tracks. The Brandon and West Rutland Railroad Company operated its railroad until May 31, 1911, when the franchises, rights, and property were purchased and operations were begun by the carrier.
