The railroad of Grand Rapids, Kalkaska & Southeastern Railroad Company is a single-track, standard-gauge, steam-railroad, extending a distance of 33.083 miles, from Rapids City to Stratford, entirely within the State of Michigan. Besides its main track mileage, the Grand Rapids, Kalkaska & Southeastern Railroad Company owns 7.150 miles of sidings, making a total of 40.233 miles of all tracks.

Corporate history and development of fixed physical property.—The Grand Rapids, Kalkaska & Southeastern Railroad Company was incorporated on September 14, 1897, under the general laws of Michigan. So far as ascertained there are no accounting records of this company in existence. A contract dated October 21, 1897, was entered into with William Alden Smith for the construction of the line of the Grand Rapids, Kalkaska & Southeastern Railroad Company from Rapids City to Stratford, a distance of 33 miles. The Chicago and West Michigan Railway Company (2) operated the property under lease from the time of its completion, on January 10, 1898, until December 1, 1899, when the Pere Marquette Railroad Company (1) succeeded to the rights of the lessee. The carrier has since succeeded to the rights, under this lease of the Pere Marquette Railroad Company (1), and operates the property of the Grand Rapids, Kalkaska & Southeastern Railroad Company.
