The railroad of the Maxton, Alma and Southbound Railroad Company, hereinafter called the carrier, is a single-track standard-gauge steam railroad, located in southern North Carolina. The main line extends from Alma southerly to Rowland, a distance of 15.070 miles. The company also owns 2.638 miles of yard tracks and sidings. Its road thus embraces 17.708 miles of all tracks owned and used. Most of the rail and part of the fastenings in the track are leased from the Seaboard Air Line Railway Company. The carrier is an industrial railroad, one of the principal industries served being the Alma Lumber Company's mill. The officers of the Alma Lumber Company are the principal stockholders of the railroad.

CORPORATE HISTORY

The carrier was incorporated February 21, 1911, under the general laws of the State of North Carolina, for a period of 60 years, for the purpose of constructing and operating a railroad from any point in Robeson County, N. C., to Rowland, N. C., or through any other county in the States of North Carolina and South Carolina to any point on the Atlantic seaboard. The date of organization of the carrier was May 11, 1911.

DEVELOPMENT OF FIXED PHYSICAL PROPERTY

The owned mileage of the carrier, 15.070 miles, was acquired partly by construction and partly by purchase. The years when the two portions of the line were constructed and the manner in which the carrier acquired the property are indicated in the following table.
