Northwestern Railroad of South Carolina

Location and General Description of Property

The railroad of the Northwestern Railroad Company of South Carolina, herein called the carrier, is a single-track, standard-gauge, steam railroad, located in central South Carolina. The main line extends southeasterly from Northwestern Junction, near Camden, to Wilson's Mill, 61.409 miles, with branch lines projecting from Manville Junction to Rose Hill and from Millard Junction to St. Paul, aggregating 13.439 miles of road. The carrier also owns 7.065 miles of yard tracks and sidings. Its road thus embraces 74.848 miles of road, with 81.913 miles of all tracks, all owned and used. In addition, this company has trackage rights over about 5 miles of road of other carriers, part of which affords access to Camden, S. C. The carrier is controlled jointly by Thomas Wilson, its president, and The Atlantic Coast Line Company (of Connecticut). The railroad is operated as a part of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Company's system.

Introductory

The carrier is a corporation of the State of South Carolina, having its principal office at Charleston, S. C. It is controlled by Thomas Wilson, its president, and The Atlantic Coast Line Company (of Connecticut) jointly, through owner ship of a majority of its outstanding capital stock. On the other hand, the records reviewed do not indicate that the carrier controls any common-carrier corporation. The property of this company has been operated by its own organization during its entire life.

Corporate History

The carrier was incorporated December 22, 1888, by special act of the State of South Carolina, as the Wilson and Summerton Railroad Company. The change of name was made by special act of February 28, 1899. The carrier, itself, together with its predecessors, total three corporations, of which two under went a change of name, and comprise the line of corporate succession culminating in the carrier as at present constituted. The following chart shows the names of the corporations, the respective dates of incorporation, and for each predecessor the date of succession, the immediately succeeding corporation, and the manner of succession. Reference to each of these corporations is made in the last column by its respective number in the first column.
