Location and general description of property.—The railroad of Paducah & Illinois Railroad Company, herein called the carrier, is a single-track, standard-gauge, steam railroad, situated in the States of Illinois and Kentucky, extending from a connection with the Burlington at Metropolis, Ill., to a connection with the Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis at Paducah, Ky., 13.934 miles. This property includes a steel bridge over the Ohio River at Metropolis. The carrier also owns 2.115 miles of yard tracks and sidings. Its road thus embraces 16.049 miles of all tracks, as detailed in Appendix 1. The property is operated by the two railroads mentioned as agent for the carrier. However, from date of completion, January 1, 1918, to date of valuation, the property has been operated by the United States Railroad Administration.

CORPORATE HISTORY

The carrier was incorporated February 22, 1910, for a period of 50 years from February 23, 1910, under the general laws of the State of Kentucky, for the purpose of constructing a railroad from a connection with the Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis at or near the city of Paducah, Ky., to a point of connection with the Burlington at or near the city of Metropolis, Ill.

DEVELOPMENT OF FIXED PHYSICAL PROPERTY

Construction of the railroad of the carrier was commenced in 1914, and was completed and the road opened for operation on January 1, 1918. In the construction of this road, all branches of the work were done under the general supervision of the forces of the carrier. The grading was done under contract with Morris, Shepherd & Dougherty and the bridge was erected by the American Bridge Company. The bridge over the Ohio River and the approaches thereto,
