Peterborough Railroad

Location and General Description of Property

The railroad of Peterborough Railroad is a single-track, standard-gage, steam railroad, lying wholly within the State of New Hampshire and extending from Greenfield to Wilton, 10.642 miles. The Peterborough Railroad also owns 1.452 miles of yard tracks and sidings, or a total of 12.094 miles of all tracks. This property is operated by the carrier as lessee through the Boston and Lowell.

Corporate History

The Peterborough Railroad was incorporated under a special act of New Hampshire of July 7, 1866, for the purpose of constructing a railroad between Peterborough and Wilton, N. H. Its principal office is at Nashua, N. H.

The property was constructed under contract and opened for operation on July 1, 1874.

Leased Railway Property

The property of the Peterborough Railroad has been operated by the carrier as lessee through the Boston and Lowell since October 11, 1887. The present lease runs for a period of 93 years dating from April 1, 1893, and provides for an annual rental of 4 per cent on the outstanding capital stock and $300 for organization expenses. The rental accrued for the year at date of valuation is recorded as $15,834.75, of which $134.75 represents expenditures for increase in weight of track material, taken to account by the Peterborough Railroad as additional rental.
