- NEW ORLEANS PACIFIC RAILWAY COMPANY — PREDECESSOR OF THE CARRIER
The New Orleans Pacific Railway Company was incorporated under the general laws of Louisiana on February 19, 1876, the date the notarial formalities were confirmed by an Act of the Louisiana Legislature. The period of its existence was perpetual. Its stated purpose was to construct, lease, own, and use a railroad with one or more tracks and suitable turnouts, beginning at a point on the Mississippi River at New Orleans or elsewhere in the State, toward Shreveport, or Marshall or Dallas, Tex.
On March 6, 1878, the roadbed of the Red River Railroad Company between Alexandria and LeCompte, La., about 16 miles, was purchased for a cash consideration of $5000, conditional upon this company utilizing the roadbed by laying iron upon it. On January 5, 1881, the property, rights, and franchises of the New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Vicksburg Railroad Company were purchased.
The principal assets acquired by this company were the land-grant rights. On February 15, 1881, the property formerly owned by the New Orleans, Mobile and Texas Railroad Company was acquired from Morgan's Louisiana and Texas Railroad and Steamship Company, for a cash consideration of
This property consisted of about 67 miles of road between Westwego and White Castle, La. This company constructed under contract with the American Railway Improvement Company the following roads:

This mileage was completed and placed in operation during the years 1881-82. The consideration provided in the contract for the construction and equipment of the road from New Orleans to Shreveport was $20,000 per mile each of capital stock and first-mortgage bonds. The authorized capital stock of this company was $3,000,000, to be issued at the rate of $20,000 per mile of road. The company authorized the execution of such documents as were required in procuring a $250,000 issue of State bonds then due or for additional bonds that might become due. The records do not disclose the amount of State bonds received or the disposition of any that were received.

Morgan's Louisiana and Texas Railroad and Steamship Company was incorporated under the laws of Louisiana on March 8, 1877. The only obtainable information concerning this company is that the property, rights, and franchises of the New Orleans, Mobile and Texas Railroad Company were purchased by it on July 15, 1879, and in turn sold to the New Orleans Pacific Railway Company on February 15, 1881, for a cash consideration of

The New Orleans, Mobile and Texas Railroad Company was incorporated under the laws of Alabama on November 24, 1866, recognized by Act of the Louisiana legislature subsequent thereto as the New Orleans, Mobile and Chattanooga Railroad Company. The period of its existence is not shown by obtainable records. Its name was changed to that first above written on February 18, 1871. No records of these companies were obtainable. The data here shown were secured from deeds of transfer and the corporate records of the carrier.
This company constructed a railroad from Westwego, to Bayou Goula, about 67 miles. Its property, rights, and franchises were sold on July 15, 1879, to Morgan's Louisiana and Texas Railroad and Steamship Company. The consideration for the sale of the property is not known.
