edit- ^ A complete description of the geographic jurisdiction will identify the exact geographic boundaries covered by the court, which are laid out by statute. For Districts that cover an entire state, the geographic jurisdiction is the entire state. For Districts that cover only part of a state, the modern practice is to divide the state into groups of named counties. The previous practice of using lines of latitude or longitude is defunct.
- ^ For a District that covers an entire state, a blank image of the state is appropriate. For a District that covers part of a state, the ideal image will be a map of the state setting off the covered portion in color. Maps showing subdivisions within the District may also be used (see, e.g., File:NorthernDistrictIowa.jpg).
