What stories, traditions, and issues animate contemporary Native American and First Nations writers and film-makers? From Joy Harjo's 3-term appointment as US Poet Laureate to the success of TV shows like Rez Dogs, Native peoples are making their mark on contemporary culture. This class will read, view, and analyze a selection of Indigenous writers, scholars, and film-makers from North America, paying particular attention to our own geographic location near the Haudenosaunee and Manahatta (a Lenape word). We will learn about ancient literatures and literacies from this part of the world, like the Hiawatha Wampum Belt and the Great Law of Peace; read contemporary writers like Tommy Orange, Leanne Simpson, Eric Gansworth, and Robin Kimmerer; and view films like Neil Diamond’s Reel Injun and Shelley Niro’s Kissed by Lightning. Our conceptual tools will be grounded in readings by contemporary Native writers as we explore how they imagine Indigeneity, sovereignty, decolonization, and revitalization. The class always involves field trips and collaborative work in addition to familiar methods of literary study, like close reading. This year, we will take advantage of the Three Sister’s Garden Planting Ceremony and Haudenosaunee Festival in October for a place-based and community-engaged learning module. In addition, the class will build digital literacy skills through a Wiki-Edu assignment that contributes to the digital and public humanities in New York and beyond.
