Planned Intervention

Our aim will be to restructure the lead section in a way that fully captures the essence of what public criminology is. We will present the lead section in a way that is clearer to the average reader, which the current lead section fails to do. Retaining many of the current sources already present in the current lead section, we will describe what public criminology is and briefly summarize the sections that follow.

Planned Intervention

The focus of our intervention will be to highlight the public misconceptions and concerns about crime and why it is argued that there need be a more accessible and transparent form of criminology. We could also address the areas in which other forms of criminology leave gaps that public criminology can fill. The Uggen and Inderbitzin article could be used for examples of how public criminology takes shape; academia, within the media, research publications.

Planned Intervention

The overall focus of these interventions is to bring awareness to the Early pioneers of public criminology and show how their contribution contributed to the existence of public criminology. A few of the sources used for this intervention come from the references that are attached to the article. One article in particular named “Christopher Uggen” who goes into detail about the what coined the term public criminology. Lloyd Ohlins great society projects main goal was the total elimination of poverty and racial injustice. This was an important step for public criminology especially because it was backed by the president of the time. Paul Rock was very skeptical of the idea of Public Criminology. He felt it was an unnecessary and undermined the legitimacy of Criminology

  • Other pioneers like Paul Rock, Todd Clear, Loader and Sparks, and Kenneth Land emphasized on Uggen and Inderbitzen’s work and reflected on Buroways definition of public criminology. It is important to reflect on these criminologist, their contributions, and the research they put forth to help make public criminology and permanent and important discipline. Without recognition of the earlier pioneers, we cannot move forward with new ones. --Aarnold15 (talk) 21:05, 17 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Planned Intervention

As a group, our intervention will be focused on providing more criticisms of public criminology from different viewpoints and authors, as well as citing examples of what criminology could potentially be. Also fixing grammatical errors and adding a section on how to improve public criminology. We plan on using "A Comment on Public Criminology" by Rock in order to showcase his critique regarding victim precipitation and how the idea of victim precipitation became translated into victim blaming within the public. We also plan to use the other articles from this class. Our group may decide to use some outside sources as well if we come upon some that will work for our section. Our outline will include adding additional critiques to the existing examples as well as elaborating on some of the critiques such as those from Rock's article. Elaborating new and old critiques will include stating the critique and then stating why it is important to consider within the field of criminology. We plan to keep the bulk of what is already in the criticism section while adding more details and examples in order to extend the section.

Contemporary Examples

The main intervention of our section will be to find more examples of Public Criminology in our Criminal Justice system now and the policy making of Public Criminology as a whole. Also, finding examples of different benefits the media has on public criminology. We believe that within the Public Criminology Wikipedia page, the students that did the research for our “Contemporary examples” section could've used more examples. Also, within Public Criminology, since the main focus of Public Criminology is to influence and include the public, I think it would be a good idea to include some examples of Newsmaking criminology. Newsmaking criminology is the idea that includes the effort of criminologists to participate in a manner to present “newsworthy” items about crime and justice (Barak, 1988). I believe this would be a good way to include the public in a way that they will be able to relate to the topic and also make it easy for them to understand the information that is given. Finally, we will be trying to make this section more into a narrative form.

As a group, our goal is to clean up the Public Criminology page so that it is more attractive for users. The first step is to clean up the page by fixing any grammatical errors, adding more citations, adding reference photos, and making sure sections are in the right spot with appropriate section headings. This step is where we can add a "see also" section with external, related sources. After the page is clean, we want to increase the traffic to the page by visiting referenced material and adding links back to our page.
