This course will explore the complex history of women in the United States from the contact period to the present, uncovering the evolution of women’s roles in American society and exploring the intersection of race, ethnicity, class, and sexual identity in shaping women’s historical experiences. The main goal is to discover how history looks different when viewed through the prism of gender. We will explore such topics as the nature of work in agricultural, industrial and post-industrial America; notions of citizenship and rights; debates about women’s proper roles; relationships between different groups of women; women’s impact on and response to changing cultural contexts; and women’s participation in movements for social and political change. For their Wikipedia assignment, students will have an opportunity to directly contribute to and help shape the representation of women in history.
