This course engages the works of Indigenous writers from Turtle Island, in what is currently called Canada and the United States. ENGL 3353 is a discussion-based course organized around several prominent genres of North American Indigenous literary production including oral traditions, poetry, the novel, nonfiction, theory, film, and stand-up comedy. We will listen to, witness, examine, and participate in the growth of Indigenous literatures in recent decades, focusing on Indigenous Storiers: Strength, Resilience and Resurgence. During the semester, we will cover: Indigenous being & presence, representation and the “burden of representation,” gender issues, intergenerational trauma, colonialism, decolonization, Indigenous futurity, and Indigenous literary nationalisms.
We'll be addressing gaps about Indigenous literature by editing and creating new pages.
