This course is a survey of the themes, contexts, and theories of modern, postmodern, and contemporary art from 1945 to the present in (primarily) the United States and Europe, beginning with the post-WWII emergence of New York City as the new artistic capital, and finishing with the global networks of contemporary practice. Emphasis will be placed on the increasing diversity of artistic media, practices (whether film and video, installation, or performance), and purposes, a diversity that opened up space for the exploration of politics, race, gender, and sexuality, and placed increasing pressure on the category of art itself. Students will help bring the course to a close by presenting on key contemporary artists while highlighting their connections with earlier artistic movements and situating them within current artistic trends.
Wikipedia assignment: in conjunction with their final project/presentation on a contemporary artist, the students contribute content to the artist's Wikipedia page.
