This course examines the issues and problems of international political economy (IPE), the place where politics and economics meet in the international arena. Our objectives are to focus on 1) what are the major ideas and issues – a descriptive task, 2) the politics and theoretical interpretations of international political economy – an analytical task; and 3) the debates and controversies about what should be done – a prescriptive task. We will look at the problems involving trade, debt, finance, development, multinational corporations, globalization, and other issues. We will look at the history of international political economy and how it has changed over the last several decades, as well as the financial and economic challenges of recent years. We will also look at the major concepts and theories that inform and explain international political economy.
