Have you ever watched a fantasy or animated movie and wondered if it could really take place? From real-life scenarios like Earth’s existing habitats or survival on Mars to completely imaginary galaxies like in Avatar and Star Wars, the environment is often a major component of the story in fictional films. But how accurately is it depicted? This course will explore the ecological reality of the landscapes and environment as they are portrayed in film. We will explore ecosystem concepts such as species interactions, energy and matter cycling, and climate processes, and view and discuss films through the lens of their ecological integrity. Students will gain knowledge about ecosystem processes and a new appreciation for imagined environments on film. The Wikipedia assignment will involve adding information about its ecological integrity to a film's Wikipedia page.
