This course surveys Latin American history from the age of independence in the early nineteenth century until the present. Because this course covers a broad and diverse region of the globe, we will focus on major trends and themes, examining selected cases that illustrate larger patterns. We will also explore Latin American countries’ relations beyond the region, particularly with the United States. While we will look at Latin America as a whole, we will focus on particular countries and regions as illustrative case studies.
