Admit it! You use Wikipedia extensively. Who doesn't? But do you use it for medical information? Your patients do! Wikipedia is now the most widely used medical reference in the world. This course will help you better understand the WP “ecosystem” including Wikiprojects, Translators Without Borders, and the offline Wikipedia health app.

Welcome to your Wikipedia course timeline. This page guides you through the steps you'll need to complete for this rotation, with links to training modules and your classmates' work spaces.
Your course has been assigned a Wikipedia Expert. You can reach them through the Get Help button at the top of this page.
Monday 11/26 10am - 4pm: Mission Hall, room 1407
- Overview of the course
- Understanding Wikipedia as a community, we'll discuss its expectations and etiquette.
- 11 - 12pm: presentation by Amin: "Becoming a Wikipedian in medical school"
- 12 - 1:30pm: lunch on your own and complete all Wiki Ed assigned trainings
- 1:30 - 4pm: discuss workplan, Wikiproject Medicine style guidelines, begin selecting articles, begin designing your teams and workplans
Tues 11/27 10am - 4pm: Mission Hall, room 2103
- 10 - 11am: presentation by Evans "Whit" Whitaker about information retrieval strategies and resources available to you at UCSF
- 11 - 12pm: update on selected articles, collective editing, Hemingway?
- 12 - 1pm: optional free therapy about the stress of residency applications
- 1 - 2pm: discuss expectations of peer-review, WP-WIP's, and Slack
- 2 - 3pm: guest presentation by Anneliese Taylor on "Open Science"
- 3 - 4pm: draw names for peer review assignments, residual Q&A, Amin's closing slides: "An emerging global movement: Embracing Wikipedia-editing in health professional schools"

- Assignment - Basic Wikipedia training modules
These are the Wiki Ed produced training modules that I believe are important and relevant to our work in this rotation. You are expected to complete all of them by the end of Day 1 of the course.

These are additional training modules that are especially relevant to you as medical students. You are expected to complete these by the end of Day 2 of the course.

By 10am on Mon 12/2 (e.g. before our first WP-WIP), post your final Workplan to your selected Wikipedia's talk page, so that you can engage with the Wikipedian community members who are interested & actively following your article. If you are working on a team, I want you to be explicit about what section(s) you will individually be responsible for.
Consider explicitly declaring any/all of the following (but don't feel limited to these):
- Is each fact referenced with an appropriate, reliable reference?
- Is everything in the article relevant to the article topic? Is there anything that distracted you?
- Is the article neutral? Are there any claims, or frames, that appear heavily biased toward a particular position?
- Where does the information come from? Are these neutral sources? If biased, is that bias noted?
- Are there viewpoints that are overrepresented, or underrepresented?
- Check a few citations. Do the links work? Is there any close paraphrasing or plagiarism in the article?
- Is any information out of date? Is anything missing that could be added?
- Which sections will you prioritize?
- What resources do you intend to look up, and when?
- How will you decide what things (signs, symptoms, side-effects, etc.) to explicitly include? To explicitly exclude?
- Will you also embed additional links to other Wiki pages?
- How will you ensure you avoid "doctor-speak" and not use jargon?

- Create your slack username and account.

- Tell Amin your slack username and he will add you to the private wikimed_fall_2018 channel
- You can create any needed additional channels for work teams. Be sure to add Amin to those channels so he can contribute PRN

- Assignment - Peer review an article
Please perform peer reviews beginning on Wed 12/12
- What should a peer-review look like? During our discussion in class on Tues 11/27, we will define specific attributes we will itemize here.
- Peer review of fall 2018:
- Please read the author's workplan before conducting your peer-review
- When you do your peer-review, suggest we include:
- 1) 2-3 overall impression sentence, 2) very specific things to address & advice
- readability
- commenting on target readership
- quality of the citations
- overall organization
- opportunities to include pictures or other media
- look at links to other WP pages, outside of WP. Make suggestions for missing links
- avoid "doctor-speak"
- aim for shorter sentences
- don't include US-centric idioms e.g. "heart attack"
- be nice/civil but don't be afraid to be real
- read for neutrality
How to conduct peer review? Themes/questions that might emerge:
- Peer reviews are DUE by end of week 3 = Before you go to sleep on Fri 12/14.
- Post the peer-review on the TALK page of the article you are reviewing.
- Here's a link to a grading rubric that Wiki Ed offers for evaluating student contributions to Wikipedia articles. While we will NOT formally use the point system, it does provide a nice complement to our "home-grown" peer-review process.

You probably have some feedback from other students and possibly other Wikipedians. Consider their suggestions, decide whether it makes your work more accurate and complete, and edit your draft to make those changes.
How to respond to the peer-reviewer's comments? We'll insert this here during class discussion on Tues 11/27
- If you disagree with your peer reviewer, explain your rationale
- respond "in-line" in the talk page where the peer-review occurred
- respond to at least a couple of their suggestions
- be nice/civil but don't be afraid to be real

Continue to expand and improve your work, and format your article to match Wikipedia's tone and standards. Remember to contact your Wikipedia Expert at any time if you need further help!

It's the final week to develop your article.
- Read Editing Wikipedia page 15 to review a final check-list before completing your assignment.
- Don't forget that you can ask for help from your Wikipedia Expert at any time!

- Fri 12/21 @ 10 - noon (note 2 hours not 1.5)
These activities will occur in Mission Hall 1407 so Amin can feed you
On Fri 12/21 from 10 - 12pm we will convene for a 2 hour meeting to share accomplishments and discuss lessons learned. Final presentations will be structured as follows: round robin "reports" (maximum of 5 minutes each) from each of you as follows:
- What did I accomplish this month (broad overview)?
- What did I learn?
- What will I take forward with me into the future?
- Now in hindsight, is there anything I would have done differently?
We will conclude our meeting with a focus group about the elective overall. This will include:
- Feedback about the guest consultants
- Strategies for improvement for future cycles of the elective
