Admit it! You use Wikipedia extensively. Who doesn't? But do you use it for medical information? Your patients do! Wikipedia is now the most widely used medical reference in the world. This course will help you better understand the WP “ecosystem” including Wikiprojects, Translators Without Borders, and the offline Wikipedia health app.

Welcome to your Wikipedia course timeline. This page guides you through the steps you'll need to complete for this rotation, with links to training modules and your classmates' work spaces.

Monday 11/23 10am - noon
- Overview of the course
- Understanding Wikipedia as a community, we'll discuss its expectations and etiquette.
- Additional content:
- presentation by Amin: "Becoming a Wikipedian in medical school"
- 30 min of protected time to begin completing all Wiki Ed assigned trainings
- discuss workplan, Wikiproject Medicine style guidelines, begin selecting articles, begin designing your teams and workplans

- Assignment - How to assign yourself an article for this course
- Assignment - Workplan
By 9:30am on Mon 11/30 (e.g. before our first WP-WIP), post your final Workplan to your selected Wikipedia's talk page, so that you can engage with the Wikipedian community members who are interested & actively following your article. If you are working on a team, I want you to be explicit about what section(s) you will individually be responsible for.
Consider explicitly declaring any/all of the following (but don't feel limited to these):
- Is each fact referenced with an appropriate, reliable reference?
- Is everything in the article relevant to the article topic? Is there anything that distracted you?
- Is the article neutral? Are there any claims, or frames, that appear heavily biased toward a particular position?
- Where does the information come from? Are these neutral sources? If biased, is that bias noted?
- Are there viewpoints that are overrepresented, or underrepresented?
- Check a few citations. Do the links work? Is there any close paraphrasing or plagiarism in the article?
- Is any information out of date? Is anything missing that could be added?
- Which sections will you prioritize?
- What resources do you intend to look up, and when?
- How will you decide what things (signs, symptoms, side-effects, etc.) to explicitly include? To explicitly exclude?
- Will you also embed additional links to other Wiki pages?
- How will you ensure you avoid "doctor-speak" and not use jargon?

On Mon 11/30 from 10 - 11am you will informally present your work-in-progress to Amin and classmates. We will help troubleshoot or discuss your evolving thoughts on your work.
- Milestones
A month-long rotation may feel like a long time, but it's remarkably short for this kind of work! I expect each of you will have begun making edits live on Wikipedia (e.g. not merely in your sandboxes) before the end of this week.

- Assignment - Peer review an article
Please perform peer reviews beginning on Wed 12/9 after our WIP#3
- What should a peer-review look like? Here's our suggested plan:
- Peer review of Nov-Dec 2020:
- Don't re-write any original text but instead make broad yet specific suggestions
- Take some time to become familiar with the page they edited so you can give specific advice
- Consider communicating with your reviewee on what they're looking for feedback on.
- Consider reviewing their intended workplan for the month!
- Look for (and catch) typos, grammatical errors
- Provide encouragement (remember ye old feedback sandwich?)
- We as peer-reviewers should know the audience of viewers/readers and keep that in mind as we provide peer-review
Logistical Details:
- Peer reviews are DUE by end of week 3 = Before you go to sleep on Sun 12/13.
- Post the peer-review on the TALK page of the article you are reviewing.
- Here's a link to a wikipedia peer-review rubricoffered by Wiki Ed for evaluating student contributions to Wikipedia articles. While we will NOT formally use the point system, it does provide a nice complement to our "home-grown" peer-review process.

Exercise
Now's the time to revisit your text and refine your work. You may do more research and find missing information; rewrite the lead section to represent all major points; reorganize the text to communicate the information better; or add images and other media.

- Assignment - Respond to your peer review
You probably have some feedback from other students and possibly other Wikipedians. Consider their suggestions, decide whether it makes your work more accurate and complete, and edit your draft to make those changes.
How to respond to the peer-reviewer's comments?
- Tears are appropriate
- Remember the peer-reviewer has the best of intentions
- Specifically address each (all?) of their recommendations
- If you disagree, politely explain why you disagree
Logistical Details:
- Post your responses to peer-review on the TALK page near the peer review.
- This will allow other Wikipedians to engage with the recommendations long after you finish this course

On Thurs 12/17 from 2-4pm (note longer duration) we will convene for a meeting to share accomplishments and discuss lessons learned. Final presentations will be structured as follows: round robin "reports" (maximum of 10 minutes each) from each of you as follows:
- What did I accomplish this month (broad overview)?
- What did I learn?
- What will I take forward with me into the future?
- Now in hindsight, is there anything I would have done differently?
