The course “Latinx Lives: Finding and Filling the Gaps” is an interdisciplinary course that will study the use of Latinx cultural materials – such as archives and literature – in digital projects. Through a decolonial theoretical approach, this course will underscore the representation of the historical and contemporary issues that have shaped the Latinx experience in the U.S. in these projects. Specifically, students will critically examine the intersection of issues of colonialism, race, ethnicity, ableness, class, gender, sexuality, feminism, migration, language, and representation in these digital projects. The course will equip students with theoretical understanding of the digital humanities and practical experience in how to use free digital tools to enhance the presence of Latinx intellectuals through digital humanities. During the course, students will two main digital projects: practice creating a Wikipedia page for a digital archive and a short audio-documentary on said Latinx project. This class will utilize accessible materials written by Latinx communities that non-profit organizations, such as Arte Público Press, and a range of scholars have recovered in digital projects. Students will select one of the works from an opensource list of Latinx digital archives and create a Wikipedia page for each of the selected Latinx subjects in the projects.
