The main objective of this course is to help students develop three primary language skills: comprehension, speaking, and writing at an advanced level. In order to reach this goal we will engage in various communicative activities based on cultural topics and everyday situations throughout the Portuguese-speaking world.
Specific Objectives
To improve the grammatical level of spoken and written Portuguese To develop the ability to read literary and non-literary texts as well as to understand film in Portuguese To develop skills related to communicating complex ideas in oral and written forms This course counts toward the Portuguese minor requirements.
This course counts toward the Spanish major as a cognate course (300-level).
Class Format:
We will read online version of influential newspapers and magazines that focus on current affairs; watch documentaries and films; listen to music; and read literary texts and crônicas, exposing students to a variety of voices and images of the Lusophone world. By the end of the semester, students will have developed a general cultural literacy of the Portuguese-speaking world and we hope that an appreciation of the cultural diversity of each country.
Students will use Wikipedia editing to build translation and composition skills in Portuguese.
