This course is an introduction to theoretical phonology, the study of how the languages of the world make use of speech sounds in order to form words. Course readings will comprise a mix of textbook chapters and articles from the primary literature, and student work will consist largely of data sets and phonological analyses in the earlier part of the semester, followed by literature review and synthesis in the latter portion of the semester.
