Hidden Figures is a course that aims to introduce the students to the fundamentals of neuroscience by highlighting the original work and contributions of women and minorities underrepresented in science. Bias in citation rates plagues science and affects journalism. This contributes to the wrong portrayal of women and minorities in all aspects of science, perpetuating the stereotypes. This course will make students aware of this bias and equip them with tools to fight it: it will teach them how to assess scholarly literature, how to interpret it, and how to identify and/or create valid sources for writing Wikipedia entries for groups underrepresented in science. The final assignment will include groups of students contributing to an existing or creating an original Wikipedia entry about a scientist from underrepresented groups. They will work with resident Wikipedians and librarians to ensure the validity of their sources, improving their chances of creating an acceptable Wikipedia entry.
