Welcome to SPAN 4040. This course is designed to provide you with an introduction to the art of translation. Throughout the semester, you will not only have the opportunity to develop a marketable skill but you will also practice critical thinking, historic and linguistic research, advanced Spanish grammar, and creative writing in English. As part of this course, you will complete and publish a translation of a Wikipedia article that does not yet have an English equivalent. This assignment is intended to give you the chance to learn more about a topic of your choice, to develop your translation skills, and to consider how your translation could impact a global audience. (You may also want to consider this translation as something you might show a future employer as an example of your translation abilities.)

- In class - Introduction to the Wikipedia project
Welcome to your Wikipedia project's course timeline. This page will guide you through the Wikipedia project for your course. Important dates for this assignment are also noted on the course syllabus.

By 11:59 pm on Thursday, September 16th, you will complete the following training modules.
- Create an account and join this course page, using the enrollment link your instructor sent you.
- It's time to dive into Wikipedia. Below, you'll find the first set of online trainings you'll need to take. New modules will appear on this timeline as you get to new milestones. Be sure to check back and complete them! Incomplete trainings will be reflected in your grade.
- When you finish the trainings, practice by introducing yourself to a classmate on that classmate’s Talk page.

- Assignment - Choose an article
By 11:59pm on Thursday, September 23th, you will submit your two articles to the instructor for approval.
- Choose two articles (a first choice, and a backup) to translate into English. Post the article links on your talk page, and submit them to the instructor for review.
- Once your instructor has approved one or both of your choices, finalize your choice of which article to translate.

- Assignment - Begin translating
- Copy your article from the target-language Wikipedia into your sandbox.
- Begin to translate your work. (You will likely want to work on your translation in a Google Doc or Word document.)

- In class - Workshop
- On Thursday, October 7, you will come to class with a full draft of your translation. You will work with your classmates to workshop one another's translations. This will be a beneficial opportunity for you to ask questions, discuss challenges, and offer helpful suggestions to your classmates.

- Assignment - Publish your work
Publish your translation BEFORE class on Thursday, October 14.
- Move sandbox articles into main space.
- If you are expanding an existing article, it's time to add your revised translation (including English sources, when available). Copy your edit into the article. If you are making many small edits, save after each edit before you make the next one. Do NOT paste over the entire existing article, or large sections of the existing article. Be sure to check the article's talk page and respond to suggestions from Wikipedians. Don't panic if your edits are removed or changed! Discuss it civilly on the article's talk page, and make a note of it for your report or presentation about your editing experience.
- If you are creating a new article, do NOT copy and paste your text, or there will be no record of your work history. Follow instruction on the "Moving out of your sandbox" handout.
- In your first edit to the article namespace, include a link of the source article (i.e., the article you translated) in the "edit summary" before hitting "save."
- Copy the code {{Translated page|es|Page Title}} to the bottom of the Wikipedia article, replacing es with the language code of the language you a translating from and replacing Page Title with the title of the source page.

In class, Thursday, October 14th, you will give a short presentation (in Spanish) about your translation process, how you selected your article, the challenges of this particular translation, and what you aspect of the translation you are most proud of.
Then, we will have a discussion in class about how this translation assignment differs from the other translations we have completed so far this semester. You will also have the opportunity to give the instructor feedback about the assignment.
