- With only ten weeks to explore the world of ‘classical music’, we will immerse ourselves in a multitude of listening experiences, to include concert attendance and live in-class performances. Building on this foundation, we will explore the impact of today's global society on this musical tradition: to what extent have new technologies, increased communication and the ensuing democratization of music impacted the ways in which we relate to ‘concert music’? Does this music still have relevance in our lives?
- This Wikipedia group project will result in your own contribution to Wikipedia in the form of a biographical entry about a classical composer. Along the way, we will build skills in conducting research, citing sources, writing to Wikipedia article standards, and assessing the quality and appropriateness of different types of research tools for various academic tasks.
Timeline
Week 1
- In class - Intro to Wikipedia Project
- Overview of the project
- Understanding Wikipedia as a community, we'll discuss its expectations and etiquette.
- Basics of editing
- Anatomy of Wikipedia articles, what makes a good article, how to distinguish between good and bad articles
- Collaborating and engaging with the Wiki editing community
Handouts: Editing Wikipedia, Using Talk Pages, Evaluating Wikipedia
- Assignment - Practicing the basics
- Create an account and then complete the online training for students. During this training, you will make edits in a sandbox and learn the basic rules of Wikipedia.
- Create a User page.
- To practice editing and communicating on Wikipedia, introduce yourself on the user talk page of one of your classmates, who should also be enrolled in the table at the bottom of the page.
- Explore topics related to your topic area to get a feel for how Wikipedia is organized. What areas seem to be missing? As you explore, make a mental note of articles that seem like good candidates for improvement.

Week 2
- Milestones
- With your group, choose the article that you will work on. Submit your proposed article and group contract on Canvas.

Week 3
- In class - Wikipedia culture and etiquette
- Talk about Wikipedia culture and etiquette, and revisit the concept of sandboxes and how to use them.
- Q&A session with instructor about interacting on Wikipedia and getting started with writing.
- In class - Using and citing sources
- Be prepared to explain close paraphrasing, plagiarism, and copyright violations on Wikipedia.

Week 4
- In class - Building articles
- Demo uploading images and adding images to articles.
- Share experiences and discuss problems.

- In class - Group work on locating sources, building bibliography
- Students work in groups to locate appropriate sources to utilize for their articles.
- Students begin building bibliographies in sandboxes.
Week 5
- Assignment - Bibliography and Outline
- Bibliography and article outline due (create in sandboxes).
Week 6
- In class - Group suggestions
- As a group, offer suggestions for improving one or two other students' article outlines, based on your ideas of what makes a solid encyclopedia article.
- In class - Media literacy discussion
- Open discussion of the concepts of neutrality, media literacy, and the impact and limits of Wikipedia.
Week 7
- Milestones
- Moving from sandboxes to live site, expand your article into an initial draft of a comprehensive treatment of the topic.
Week 8
- In class - Group work and reporting out
- In-class sharing of article drafts on live site, feedback between groups.

- Incorporate feedback from instructor and other groups as you polish your articles.
Week 10
- Assignment - Final Article Due
