Course meetings

In class - Introduction to the Wikipedia project

Welcome to your Wikipedia project's course timeline. This page will guide you through the Wikipedia project for your course. Be sure to check with your instructor to see if there are other pages you should be following as well.

Your course has also been assigned a Wikipedia Content Expert. Check your Talk page for notes from them. You can also reach them through the "Get Help" button on this page.

To get started, please review the following handouts:

Week 2

Course meetings
Tuesday, 10 October 2017   |   Thursday, 12 October 2017
Assignment - Practicing the basics
  • Create an account and join this course page, using the enrollment link your instructor sent you.
  • It is essential that you log in with your username every time you work on or complete an assignment. You will not get credit for completing the work if you are not logged in.
  • It's time to dive into Wikipedia. Below, you'll find the first set of online trainings you'll need to take. New modules will appear on this timeline as you get to new milestones. Be sure to check back and complete them! Incomplete trainings will be reflected in your grade. Complete the four training modules by Sunday, 15 October 2017, 11:59 pm.
  • When you finish the trainings, practice by introducing yourself to a classmate on that classmate’s Talk page.

Week 3

Course meetings
Tuesday, 17 October 2017   |   Thursday, 19 October 2017
Assignment - Form your group and identify an article

Form your group (up to 5 students). Individually complete the training module "Finding Articles" and then identify a course-related article that has an epidemiology section or paragraph(s) suitable for improvement, or, perhaps is missing altogether.

  • Identify which group member's sandbox all members of the group will use for drafting edits.
  • Submit the article URL and the group membership at the beginning of class on Tuesday, 24 October 2017, per the instructions received in class on 5 October 2017.
  • The course instructor will review the article you selected to be sure that it is suitable for the assignment.

Familiarize yourself with editing Wikipedia by adding a citation to the article. There are two ways you can do this:

  • Add 1-2 sentences to the course-related article, and cite that statement to a reliable source, as you learned in the online training.
  •  The Citation Hunt tool shows unreferenced statements from articles. First, evaluate whether the statement in question is true! An uncited statement could just be lacking a reference or it could be inaccurate or misleading. Reliable sources on the subject will help you choose whether to add it or correct the statement.

Week 4

Course meetings
Tuesday, 24 October 2017   |   Thursday, 26 October 2017
Assignment - Add to an article

Expand the contribution that you made last week. Post you plan and potential sources on the Talk page of your Wikipedia articles to obtain feedback from your class peers and the Wikipedia community. Revise your work as necessary.

Have your first round of edits ready by no later than Thursday, 2 November 2017. This is what your classmates and other editors will peer review.

Week 5

Course meetings
Tuesday, 31 October 2017   |   Thursday, 2 November 2017
Assignment - Peer review training
  • First, take the "Peer Review" online training this week.
  • Each group will peer review two other groups' articles. The instructor will make the assignment of which articles to peer review.
  • Remember, other editors may also be reviewing the article. Be respectful of others' opinions.
  • Your peer reviews are due 9 November 2017.

Week 6

Course meetings
Tuesday, 7 November 2017   |   Thursday, 9 November 2017
Assignment - Peer review due

Peer reviews are due Thursday, 9 November 2017, 11:59 pm.

Course meetings
Tuesday, 14 November 2017   |   Thursday, 16 November 2017
Assignment - Respond to peer review

Use this week to respond to the feedback you received from your classmates and possibly other editors to revise and improve your article.

Week 8

Course meetings

Assignment - Article Submission
  • Move the article from the sandbox to the main Wikipedia page. This is due no later than Tuesday, 21 November 2017. This is the version that will be evaluated. Any additional changes will not be considered for the purpose of the WikiProject assignment.
