The course examines the twinned tales of Cupid and Psyche (Apuleius) and Beauty and the Beast (du Beaumont) across nearly two millenia and many different cultures. Works we'll be studying, in addition to the two already mentioned, include Jane Eyre, Till We Have Faces, several poems, two films (Cocteau's version and the animated Disney version), a picture book retelling of Cupid & Psyche (Craft & Craft), and more. Students will be able to choose from among several project options, one of which will be working to expand Wikipedia content on specific works in the Beauty and the Beast / Cupid and Psyche tradition.
