This pilot project has been carried out by Wellesley College students who read and discuss the Divine Comedy by medieval Italian poet Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) in English translation. This masterpiece of world literature stands as a great entry point into questions of ethics, social justice, and gender.

In the course of the semester, students created new and revise existing Wikipedia entries on the medieval female and queer characters featured or mentioned by Dante in his work.

Assignment - Evaluate an Existing Wikipedia Article

Choose an existing Wikipedia article about a character that appears in the portion of the Divine Comedy discussed during Week 2 (Inferno 11-28), and evaluate it using the guidelines offered on the Wikipedia Dashboard.

Do not limit yourself to the official Wikipedia guidelines. Compare critically that article with the type of information offered on the Dante Encyclopedia (and, if you can speak Italian, the online Enciclopedia Dantesca; see the Resource page on the course website for links to both encyclopedias): Is there an entry for this character? And if there is, is it structured differently? For example, is the focus different? What secondary literature is cited there? If you were to improve that article, what would you add, change, or do?

Choose one of the following articles:

  • Andrea dei Mozzi (Inferno 15)
  • Bertran de Born (Inferno 28)
  • Bonturo Dati (Inferno 22)
  • Brunetto Latini (Inferno 15)
  • Capaneus (Inferno 14)
  • Ciampolo di Navarra (Inferno 21)
  • Dis (Divine Comedy) (Inferno 11)
  • Ezzelino III da Romano (Inferno 12)
  • Franciscus Accursius (Inferno 15)
  • Guido I da Montefeltro (Inferno 27)
  • Guy de Montfort, Count of Nola (Inferno 12)
  • Obizzo d’Este, Marquis of Ferrara (Inferno 12)
  • Pietro della Vigna (Inferno 13)
  • Reginaldo degli Scrovegni (Inferno 17)
  • Tegghiaio Aldobrandi (Inferno 16)
  • Loderingo degli Andalò (Inferno 23)
  • Vanni Fucci (Inferno 24)
