Answer
editSão Sebastião de Moçambique in Mozambique was colonized in 1510 by Portugal. I thought along the lines of Portuguese explorers and then read that Vasco da Gama reached Mozambique (among other place). I read Mozambique and then the History of Mozambique, and there it was, impossible to write or pronounce. MattSal 03:15, Nov 27, 2004 (UTC)
Actually, this is a tricky one. I went to History of Portugal, and from there I found out what areas were discovered in the 15th and early 16th centuries. The Azores seemed to be a possible candidate, but I did check out some other islands too. In the process, I disambiguated Ascension Island on History of Portugal. Finally, looking at the Azores, I checked out the islands one-by-one until I got to Flores Island, Portugal. First, I disambiguated this page, and then as I was reading the article, I found that it had been vandalized, and the last sentence was cut off before "reign": "The island was populated in the reign of king Manuel I of Portugal, in the year of 1510, with people of some regions of continental Portugal, mainly of the northern provinces.". I restored that text. --timc | Talk 22:00, 27 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Mauritius is the island. I found the answer by searching for "island" and "1510." The answer was on the page Mauritius.

The correct answer is Flores. I still feel a bit guilty that I didn't revert the vandalism as soon as I found it; on the other hand, had I not written the questions for this quiz, then I wouldn't have come across this page at all, so it still wouldn't have been fixed. I don't know if that makes it alright. Eugene van der Pijll 02:03, 16 Dec 2004 (UTC)
