Wikipedia talk:Birthday Committee/Merge?
The result of the proposal for a merger is keep separate. The two projects will work together instead of merging. |
This is a discussion page to discuss a possible merger with Esperanza, a group whose goals are very similar to ours. Unsure of how to how members would react to such an idea, I have set up this page. We received this letter on September 12, 2006:
Original Request for Merge
editHello everyone,
I would just like to commend this project for its wonderful participation and purpose. You guys have started a great idea on Wikipedia. I can see that many of you are Esperanzians, and would like to invite you to join the newly renovated Birthday Campaign at Esperanza. It seems silly to have two projects concentrated on the same goal. The only differences are that the membership requirements would be changed to the requirements set forth by the Esperanza charter. The templates could be ported as well as leadership and your system of approval of new templates. I wanted to wait for Steveo2 to return before asking. I think your cause will reach more people and will help spread WikiLove. I am open to discuss this here.
- Yours,

Pro-Merge?
edit- Steveo2 I agree with Heaven's Wrath's statement that have two groups with the same goal is wasteful. However, I hate to lose our templates, categories, and rules through a merge. Overall, I am for this merge, and now realize that I should have joined Esperanza before forming my own committee.
- I would just like to say that the templates will not be lost. Either they would be used as they are, or possible move to the Esperanza project space. The program will simply be named the Esperanza Birthday Committee. The categories can be renamed. The only major change would be the 150 edit minimum to join Esperanza. – Heaven's Wrath Talk 23:12, 13 September 2006 (UTC)
- ladybirdintheuk Makes sense to me :)
- Daniel.Bryant - very similar ideals, both ESP and BDC would benefit by merge. 12:11, 15 September 2006 (UTC)
- Support. A natural conclusion, I think. EVOCATIVEINTRIGUE TALKTOME | EMAILME 23:05, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
Anti-Merge?
editUnsure?
edit- Thistheman - While I do recognize Heaven's Wrath's statement as a purposeful one, and do empathize with the statements of my colleagues above, I am having concerns about the proposed merger. Esperanza is an excellent association, one that I am proud to be a part of. I am also proud to be a part of the Birthday Committee, and I feel that the overall identity of the committee as a whole will be lost in Esperanza. Agreed, it is unnecessary to have two groups having the same goal, but I feel that our name as the "Birthday Committee" shall be lost in such a merger. This, to me, would not be such a benefit. 17:18, 15 September 2006 (UTC)
- I would like to say that the way I was hoping to combine would not eliminate the name at all. Here is the project page that I created to organize the project. The project would be entitled, the Happy Birthday Campaign (or similar) by the Birthday Commitee. I would not want the great idea of the current BDC to be lost in Esperanza, as members would consider themselves part of Esperanza and the Birthday Committee. The idea was to bring more involvement and participation to this project. – Heaven's Wrath Talk 18:09, 15 September 2006 (UTC)
- I don't think that we should merge the two projects into the Esperanza project. What about the people in the BDC that aren't Esperanzian? Are we going to force them into joining Esperanza just because they are members of the BDC. The only thing I am against here is the fact that all BDC members will have to follow Esperanza guidelines once the merger is finished. We must handle this merger with extreme delicacy.--Edtalk c E 23:51, 15 September 2006 (UTC)
- I have the same fears that Ed and Thistheman have. I also question if the change is really needed. I agree that having two groups with the same goal is a bit much, but I like how things are now. Mr. Turcottetalk 23:07, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

edit- Who are we to say that all of the BDC members join Esperanza? Well, first we have to see which came first:Esperanza Bday committee or this committee? Remember that not all of the BDC members aren't Esperanzian, though most of them are. I think that we all should just have the same program, though. What we'll do is that we can merge all of our calendars into one calender for the whole Wikipedia. That way, Esperanza and the BDC both can wish people Happy Birthday.--Edtalk c E 22:26, 14 September 2006 (UTC)
- I believe that Birthday Wishes has always been a part of Esperanza, but only after the spread of the Birthday Committee did the Esperanza Birthday Project come. I'm not an authoritative source on that subject, though, so you may want to check on that with someone else. Steveo2 10:58, 18 September 2006 (UTC)
- New idea. I was just checking out the Welcoming Committee and thought about the way it was set up. I am open to not actually merging at all. Instead, the Birthday Committee can stay seperate. My thoughts where that since the calendar was organized by Esperanza, it would be the proper project to house this idea. The most important part of the idea was to not have the two projects enter into competition over who wished who happy birthday. The reasoning behind the merger was to find out how all of the members here felt about the idea. I do not want to limit the spreading of WikiLove simply so the project can be under the banners of Esperanza. – Heaven's Wrath Talk 00:58, 19 September 2006 (UTC)
- Works for me. I think we should just merge the calendar. --Edtalk c E 00:28, 20 September 2006 (UTC)
- 'Tis good. Thank you for your response to my concerns, Heaven's Wrath. Thistheman 02:05, 20 September 2006 (UTC)
- Works for me. I think we should just merge the calendar. --Edtalk c E 00:28, 20 September 2006 (UTC)
