Wikipedia talk:Don't use Grammarly

Interesting, but...

edit

It would be helpful to have much clearer 'Before' and 'After' examples of any problems. TBH: I couldn't follow them. Are there diffs available to demonstrate the problem that a Grammarly user has accidentally created when editing in source code, please? Nick Moyes (talk) 16:20, 19 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

Is there a reason to not use Grammarly on articles?

edit

This essay demonstrates why editors should not use Grammarly on talk pages. Is there a reason why editors should not use it on articles? I've never used Grammarly, but the advertisements make it appear that the user has control of what changes are made, and therefore could be make before pressing the "Publish changes" button. Grammarly isnt that catastrophic if used with caution

edit

I think many people who use it accidentally change programming words. As Grammarly sees that as normal words and highlights them in green like the other ones. Thus causing unaware editors to edit sources instead of normal text. Otherwise its ok to be used. Sunnybuthappy (talk) 09:19, 24 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

This whole essay is over-the-top; there's no problem with using Grammarly when editing. Grammarly, in my understanding, only prompts spelling and grammar suggestions; it does not automatically apply edits or compel users to do so. But as this is just an essay with low pageviews and no teeth, I will not contest it. InfiniteNexus (talk) 22:16, 1 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Exactly. I recommend to all ESLs to use this or another tool, I use it myself. Just - use such tools responsibly. And yes, this is just an essay, I only stumbled upon it by accident. What we need is Wikipedia:Grammarly guideline on how to use Grammarly well; that this redirects here is hardly ideal. I concur with the above comments. I also think using Grammarly for the output text visible in VisualEditor (rather than wikitext) could be harmless. And, it looks like you can pick your ENGVAR in the website. — Frostly (talk) 03:58, 27 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Frostly @GoingBatty @Sunnybuthappy @InfiniteNexus @Nick Moyes Would anybody be interested in replacing the redirect at Wikipedia:Grammarly with a guide on how to use Grammarly on Wikipedia? Right now, I think it is a disservice to everyone to have that page redirect to this advice about it being bad, which does not even seem to represent a consensus. @Piotrus It is worth checking the archives at WP:GOCE which mention Grammarly (see here). In particular, see HERE and HERE. There are still many concerns about its use, and yet many people have it on their computers and would probably think it's OK to use here.
I think this page is very wordy and extremely hard to understand. It is also probably quite outdated now. As a first start, it could be written so that you don't lose the will to live half way through reading it, and is actually aimed at new users, not the cognicenti. Nick Moyes (talk) 10:36, 4 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
I think that redirect is misleading and should not have been created. Either a new page on responsible use of Grammarly ought to be created, or the redirect should be deleted. InfiniteNexus (talk) 18:13, 4 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Piotrus: I've never used Grammarly, so I don't feel comfortable writing a guide about it. GoingBatty (talk) 23:51, 4 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
