L 20e α was a design plan for a class of battleships for the Imperial German Navy, scheduled to be built in 1918. Reinhard Scheer, the commander of the fleet, wanted larger main guns and a higher top speed for the new battleships, to combat the latest ships in the British Royal Navy. Plans were drawn up in 1914, but shelved after the outbreak of World War I in July. Lessons from the 1916 Battle of Jutland were incorporated into the design. A variety of proposals were submitted, some with eight main-armament guns up to 42 cm (16.5 in). Work on the design was completed by September 1918, too late for the ships to be built; Germany's war situation was declining, and resources were being reallocated to support the U-boat campaign. The battleships would have been significantly longer, at 238 m (780 ft 10 in), than the preceding 180 m (590 ft 7 in) Bayern class. They would also have been significantly faster, with a top speed of 26 knots (48 km/h; 30 mph) instead of 21 knots (39 km/h; 24 mph), and would have been the first German warships to have mounted guns larger than 38 cm.
